Buying a new whistle

Oh God I’m in trouble!

My wife has sad I can spend no more than £50/ $90 on a new whistle(s) … but what to buy? Do I buy another high D and if so, who do I go for? The new Blackbird is coming out and that sounds interesting , but there are so many other babies out there that need my tender loving care.

Then there is the matter of whether I should remain a purist and stick with metal or allow myself a slip of faith and go over to ABS? There again, maybe I should try the Parks PVC - the one I tried a while ago sounded pretty nifty.

As if that isn’t enough, there is the issue of what key do I buy - do I add to my D/C collection and blame it on need, or do I bring in another key and if so which one? I’ve got pretty much everything already, so there are no gaps to make it easier. The Dixon G in ABS looks interesting and could be some fun, but I’m fast becoming their best customer, and a change would be nice. A friend recently told me about the Syn tunable D .. and from the pics it looks very pretty - and it’s aluminium, so it’ll give me the tones I like hopefully.

Of course there are a few Susatos available in different keys, but their gear always reminds of of my school recorder days - and then I start twitching and start behaving like a trucculent teenager.

Just to make matters worse I just went to an online shop and found a very pretty Tamlinn wood D in my price range!!!

What do I buy?

On a separate note, I know how to do basic tweaks to a Generation, but is the F/G a bit haphazard for tuning like the high D? I’ve only ever tried fiddling with D Generations and I rather fancied having a dabble with some other keys as well.

A whistle in the key of A can be useful to have, especially for playing along with vocalists. Shaw has whistles in A, if you can handle the breath requirements.

I tried a Tamlin at Hobgoblin about 18 months ago and it was absolutely awful. I would have bought every other whistle in the shop before i’d have bought the Tamlin. Could have been just the one i tried but i certainly wouldn’t be sending money for one without having a go first.

How much are Sindt’s these days? Probably worth scrounging up a few more pennies and going for one of those. Sindt’s are well wicked!

Agreed.
