Yeah, some of us learned about DADGAD from Jansch’s playing.

Jimmie Page liked Blackwaterside so much he ripped it right off, called it Black Mountain Side, and dared Jansch to sue him over the rights.

Interesting! In any case, Jansch was apparently a guitarist’s guitarist at that point. He influenced a lot of other players.

I don’t think folks my age would have confronted DADGAD tuning at that point in time if not for Jansch (and Renbourn, Richard Thompson and Martin Carthy, etc) who apparently (all) got it from the playing of Davey Graham. But little of Graham’s playing made it to this side of the big pond. Pentangle, Fairport and Steeley Span did make it to our shores and were well received. Much of the guitar playing in open tuning here in the states was based on folk blues, and this new music offered a very fresh perspective and approach to playing beyond standard tuning.

I guess that’s why I take note of the man’s passing.
