For a while Peter Cox was experimenting with making ‘budget’ instruments, at least he was according Brad McEwen in Cambridge, who is or was a member of cittern-L. Brad had several Cox instruments he spoke highly of, but said that Cox was using wood that was perfectly sound, but perhaps not as perfect as some, or using Ontario hardwoods instead of imported timber & budget hardware instead of top of the line schallers. Do you know if this is one from that era? The photos don’t really tell the tale.

I screwed up the original posting and put it in ebay.ca.

The zouk is relisted here on ebay.com: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=190227635288

As for the quality of the instrument, the wood is top quality cedar and walnut, and the grain is nice and straight in both. The tuners, however, are not schallers, but seem to be a lower grade tuner like these: http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Tuners/Mandolin_tuners/Economy_A-style_Mandolin_Tuners.html

The only noticable difference in quality I can see between this instrument and Peter’s newer bouzoukis is he is no longer using marine spar finish, and instead is using a satin finish now.

The round soundhole does look plain, but from what I gather from Mike Spicer, its size and position optimizes the projection, although it doesnt look fancy.

I have a Peter Cox mandolin, and I’m going out on a limb to say that the era of him making budget instruments has yet to end. My Mandolin is made mostly from recycled mahogony from an old piano, and is the best mandolin I have played as of yet. Actually most of Peter’s smaller flat-top instruments a la mandolin, dulcimer ect. Sell for under $500,

Yeah, the last I checked with him, his new bouzoukis and citterns were selling between 1200-1500 depending on carved vs. flat top. Certainly not expensive as the tone is comparable to instruments costing nearly double that. Interesting idea to use old mahogany from pianos, I didn’t know he did that.

Well, no bites on the auction. Im open to offers as I need to sell to fund a concertina purchase.
