Sobell Cittern/Zouk/Frankenwhatsit on eBay

I’ve been eyeing off this little number on eBay for a few days.

It strikes me that the starting price for a mature Sobell instrument is very reasonable … but …

… this has clearly been relisted. If somebody else is interested they certainly haven’t played their hand yet (at the time of this posting.) The photo set is kinda ‘dreamy/artistic’ rather than stark/unforgiving, and the seller is quite frank about it being somewhat worn.

I’d appreciate any opinions and advice you might have, in full knowledge that you might tell me it’s a dog and get it for the base price. :stuck_out_tongue: I’ve never played a Sobell but their reputation is second to none.

Oh, if anybody actually knows the instrument or her history, please share; she’s a Dublin lassie now.

I’ve never owned one, but I did have the pleasure of playing a Sobel once. They are superb. Can’t comment about the price or condition, but have you ever played a ten string? I’ve tried ten string citerns and mandolins. Never can get the hang of that fifth course. Same with the five-string fiddle. I don’t know what to do with it.

Thanks Tim. I’ve never played a five course instrument, but I play guitar in a range of altered tunings, as well as mando, octave mando, and 'zouk, so that might not be a problem. The attraction of course wasn’t the specifics of this particular design but the idea of owning and playing an affordable Sobell instrument.

I notice that someone has offered the starting price so who knows how affordable it will be at the end?

Haven’t seen or played the instrument in person but I know the seller, Tony Byrne. Fantastic guitarist and a good guy. (plays in Julie Fowlis’ band among other things). He’s always selling something or other, I think he just buys things to try out for a while and then moves them on. He actually just sent me a note that he was selling this .I remember when he bought it and heard it was amazing,so i reckon you’d be fine. Wouldn’t see him as a guy to try and pass on a duffer, more likely he’s just got his eye on something else.
Good luck!
Alan
