Was in Ennis earlier this morning, saw posters up for a CD launch (next saturday). Bríd O’Gorman backed by Eoin O’Neill on the bouzouki., Bluebells are blooming.
Thanks for the name of the Concert Reel. Brid O’Gorman plays beautifully on that recording, and I thought her accompanist also had a lovely, light touch. They really get the spirit of the music–“the pure drop.”
I’d like to recommend another flute player I’ve just gotten to know through his new CD called Tuile Agus Trá, The Flowing Tide. His name is Micheál Ó hAlmhain, and his phrasing, like Bríd’s, is truly wonderful fresh. Here’s a clip of him playing a slow air. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XURNtTyJlhI
Thanks for the Micheál Ó hAlmhain recommendation. Really enjoying this recording.
Steve Cooneys backing is unreal. Refreshing to hear someone whose flute playing sounds unique and different from other players. Great stuff.
He’s been around for a very long time, a stalwart of the Comhaltas circuit, his fluteplaying was included in a few of the old CCE tour lps as far back as 1975, if you care to hear to hear him in his prime.
Thanks, Mr. Gumby, for making us aware of this recording. I’ve just posted it on “thesession.org”, with the following comments :
“Released very recently, and thanks to Custy’s in Ennis for a very efficient service in prompt delivery. This is the first solo recording by Co. Clare flute player Brid O’Gorman, very ably accompanied by Eoin O’Neill on bouzouki. The playing on it is immaculate, with a beautiful tone, and a very fine selection of tunes, Joannie Madden’s air, “The Hills Of New Zealand” being particularly outstanding, and it’s great to hear the “Concertina” hornpipe again, as well as classic favourites of mine, the “Shaskeen” and “Kiss The Maid Behind The Barrel”.
I think it was Harry Bradley who once said, “there’s more spit than polish in my music”. This is lovely Irish flute music, but for my tastes, just a wee bit too polished, too sedate, and not enough “spit” [ not literally, but I hope you know what I mean ].
Personal preferences aside, it’s still one of the best solo flute albums to come out in the last 10 years”.
