Black Hills Beginner Session (well, maybe in a year)

Hey, guys, it’s happening here in the Black Hills! Rich Rose, the Irish mando player who used to do Beginner’s Sessions in Seattle, me and the whistle, a fiddler, some college kids, and Hank Freidel with his concertina and Steve Thorpe, went to the first organizational meeting of the BHSU University/Community Irish Traditional Music Society. We actually played some session tunes, a few I didn’t know, got my hands on the book of Irish tunes from the Seattle sessions, and we’re gonna make music here. We’ve got the Bay Leaf every week on Tuesday, so young people can come, at 6PM for supper and music at 7! Hey, give us a year we’ll have a great Black Hills Session. I gotta call Ingrid and let her know, we’re going to Spearfish every damn week! It’s happening! I thought it would never ever happen! Ever! But it is!

HUGS! Wahoooie!

Funny thing, at the end as we were breaking up, I asked people for pebbles. Rich countered with, “Anna, you are the only woman I’ve ever met who within five minutes is asking a guy for his stones!” Nobody got it! Cracked me up!

We’re a study group now, but we got the venue, and everything we need to be a real session, soon!

YES! YES!

YAY!

Gave a few Megs away, and had the privilege of whating the lightbulb go on when a young woman took a whistle (she was a sax player) and was toodling a bit by the end of the “session” we played Boys from Blue Hill, Fanny Power, and Maggie in the Woods, and it wasn’t bad! Not kidding!

Oh, I gotta catch up on learning session tunes!

Oh, yeah, I got a nice solo on “Star of the County Down!” Me, who couldn’t play in public without freezing!

Wow Anna, congratulations and great job! I’m very happy for you! And very happy that you found some people to hang out with that you can share your joys of music with! And congrats on your solo!

Dared to dream didn’t you Anna? If you hang in there long enough I believe something will happen… and it did!

Congratulations on a wonderful beginning.

Hi Anna,

I’ll be home for Christmas this year and I’m going to do my best to get up there to meet you and play some tunes! I’m sure that my parents would love to come along as well. It was my father that a number of years ago bought me my first nice whistle - and I can’t think that he’s actually seen me play it in a group.

Maybe I’ll even bring my bodhran home to torture you.

Would you mind sending me along your play list so that I can make certain that we’ve got a few tunes in common?

Erik

p.s. seems like I know (know of) Steve and Hank. Is Hank a prof at BHS? Seems like my father may have worked with him or taken a class from him so many years ago (25?).

When are you coming to the Eastern Pan-handle of West Virginny?? We need organizin, bad.

Congrats

I just e-mailed my father. Turns out that he and Hank are friends. I thought that the name was familiar. Chalk one up for the tiny state of South Dakota.

Erik! Waaahaaahooey! Bring the babies! ('er little kids!) Bring everybody! As soon as we have a playlist, I’ll send it on! Actually it’s remarkable how we even managed to land on a few tunes we all knew!

We haven’t shot a bodhran player, yet! Yeah, Hank is now the principle of the elementary school, Steve is still writing songs and singing around the hills. (When my book came out, he decided I wasn’t a poseur after all, and decided he could play some of MY music. I got sick of being his “birdie” toodling on his songs) He’s learning some, but we never get to practice! It’ll be good to see you ALL! I’m dying to meet Julie, anybody who can handle a medical practice, make beautiful babies and put up with a whistlemaker gets BIG points in my book!

This whole state is like a small town!

If I (WE) can do it, so can you! Go SMOOTY!

YA KNOW SOMETHING? I WILL!!!

Thanks for the inspiration!

Smoot,
