I’ve been doing a lot of comparisons between the original stopper in my flute and a delrin stopper made by Robert Bigio, and for how I play, I’ve settled on the original stopper. However, the effect this piece of plastic has on a flute is quite interesting and worth experiencing.
Out of curiosity I recently purchased a Pakistani flute in a beautiful case from an ebay auction. I didn’t pay much for it, and it came as no surprise that the flute was completely unplayable. I was curious what the stopper was made of. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was made from styrofoam, more like a styrofoam ball than a proper disk shape. I plan to list the flute back on ebay as a FLO (flute-like object), with no real intention of selling it to some unsuspecting buyer, but only as an advertising gimmick. My line will be,"This flute and case would look nice setting on the mantle of your fireplace to impress your visitors. But if you a really interested in playing the flute, I urge you not to bid on this auction. Please contact me and I will give you my recommendations on how to choose a playable flute.
