McCarthy had some serious problems, not only in his personal life, but in his private life. I don’t think he was a nice guy, and the actions of not only him, but many in Washington at the time were chillingly similar to those today who take the attitude, “why should a terrorist get a fair trial?” It is absurd to think someone can lose a right to due process based on what he is accused of.
That said, I think that Sen. McCarthy is made out too much as the Satan, while those accused of Communist affiliation are portrayed too much as saintly martyrs. I wish we could learn from the past without having to portray it so one-dimensionally.
