Beatin' them drums

I got to play tympani (mostly) for our local orchestra’s Christmas concert! It was fun. What was not fun was having to learn the glockenspiel in two rehersals. I’d never played them before. But we had no tubular bells for “Carol of the Bells” so I managed to do it. Whew! But those tympani were fun. (I’m still working on my oboe fund though)

Did the concert include Also](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ENl4JK6LJ0Y%22%3EAlso) Spracht Zarathustra?

Well, since this was a Christmas concert, and all-

No, but that one would be fun.

I played sleigh bells and whip crack for “Sleigh Ride”…

wish I’d seen this first…for inspiration-

I didn’t know that had glockenspiel in it.

Fiftythird measure, 2nd and 3rd beats.

I think they were originally door chimes. The glockenspeil came along later.

All I know about that glockenspiel thang is that it is heavy. I had to carry it to the stage when we set up for the concert.

I am now trying to decide if I want to do this percussion bit again this spring or wait for the oboe fund to mature so I can get one and give that a go to see if I remember anything about playing the nasty creature.
