Tonight is our community orchestra’s concert. We’ve been practicing since January so I hope all goes well. We are playing Brandenburg Sinfonia-the most fun for me(no stress), tunes from Star Wars(good timpani part there), tunes from Phantom of the Opera (this one is kinda hard), the Shaker Melody from Copland, I love this one but not much fun for me since I don’t come in until the very end, and last Clash and Roar- great fun since it has a LOT of percussion. There will be other stuff, but they don’t have timpani parts so I get to just enjoy listening.
It should be great fun but nerve wracking too, particularly since one of my timpani decided to not hold tune at last night’s practice. The pedal kept bleeding off to a lower note. I’m going to get there early and another drummer and I are going to try to devise a fix for the thing. Gee, it’s always something…
I rarely have opportunities to play with other humans (the dog and cat sometimes accompany, however,) so sometimes I feel as if I’m trying to learn a tune for nothing.
Fortunately, I think I’ve stirred up enough interest in reviving the Norfolk-kin string band for our August Nags Head reunion…so I’m trying to pull together Wagon Wheel, Man of Constant Sorrow, and maybe a couple bluegrass standards for then. I sure wish I were a more qualified fiddler, but the audience is rather non-judgmental.
It was FUN!!! and went very well. We watched some video my daughter made when we got home and the best part was my granddaughter. They sat in the back so if she got to “acting up” they could go to the lobby. This worked great because she really got into it. Sarah ended up videoing her, moving to the music, complete with hand gestures, etc. The wonderful thing was this was music she was hearing for the first time but she anticipated where the tunes were going and was right with it! If I can get what I need I’ll put that section on yertube.

Very cool! I considered (but then dropped) looking into joining/trying out (Clarinet) for one of the community orchestras 'round here… I think you’re trying to influence me.

I have a friend who plays with the Knox Symphony that goes up to play with your group - he enjoys it a lot and says you all do a great job! small world it is!
Not quite that fast! Remember I just got my Rigoutat oboe that actually plays like it’s supposed to, in May. But, my teacher says I should be able to play with them on oboe this Fall.
We love it when any of those folks come up to join in. They make a big difference in our sound. One fella comes up periodically to do string clinics too.
