Bayley Barrel drones?

I have a Quinn & Kohler chanter that I’m reasonably happy with, but sometime I’d like to acquire a set of drones. I like the idea of a set of barrel drones, does anyone have any experience with Bayley sets?

Yeah, I used to have a Lynch set, I sold them… I’m an idiot.
Also used to have a Gallagher set in C… I’m a genuine idiot

Whilst I play a normal set of Bayley pipes I have seen his and tried his barrel sets. They play well and are a really neat idea as they are easy to carry round. There was a set of these up for grabs on Ebay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Uilleann-Bagpipe-half-set-with-Barrel-Style-Drones-/261558719355?pt=UK_Woodwind_Instruments&hash=item3ce61d537b but he appears to have taken it down so maybe it sold.

The barrel sets are really nice to play, good fun too.

I’ve played one that had two regulators ‘barrelled’ as well as the drones. The only disadvantage with this was you had to turn off the drones by tipping them, rather than by a drone key.

The set on eBay was designed for separate regulators and as such had a stop key for the drones.

I can recommend them, although I do not own a barrel set myself.

I own a set of Bayley barrel drones. I bought them originally for a C chanter, but in fact they can be tuned from C to D, and thus be a compact set of travelling/session drones. It’s easier to get all the drones going in C. In D I usually use just the baritone and tenor. They also have a quint (tuned to the 5th) that I didn’t find as useful as I expected.

Because each drone is controlled individually, I’ve also set it up with the bass in C, Bari in D, so I can switch charters, which is sometimes useful when accompanying singers.

I now have a full C set under construction, so will likely move these on in the fall. Feel free to PM with questions
