at last :) my cotter arrived.....

after a good round of playing wait-for-the-postman, it arrived…only when i had given up hope. it’s beautiful, it’s in tune! and it’s loud  … compared to what i was playing before (one of the pakistani firewood models). it’s so easy to fill  i’m so broke now but it’s worth every single cent. i’ve never been happier.

Awesome! I noticed you post tunes of you playing on your blog…

Great stuff..can’t waite to hear the flute

Hey Chih, sounds like a wonderful flute! It certainly felt like took its time to get here didn’t it? Don’t forget to post a review when you’re accustomed to playing it!

Congrats!
I also have a Cotter flute on order (a 6-key, should be ready around june next year).
There have been very positive comments on Eamonn’s flutes, but so far, no pictures.
Anyone care to share??

Thanks
Jeroen

yeah, i’m going to take some pics soon. not that it’d make much difference anyway. it looks like any other flute, except all the 6 tone holes are on one body. if you look at the desi seery site there’s a photo of a seery. it looks like that. down to the case. the flute’s light, the case is heavy you can whack a man with it.

I’ve had my Cotter keyless for a couple of months now. It’s my first wood flute, so it’s taken a while to get used to the stretch on the left hand and covering the large A hole, but I found it really responsive right away, with a bright, clear tone and easy, in tune second octave. I played my first gig with it on sunday in a barn during a storm, and people were dancing o.k., so good volume too. I still find it hard to get a good c#, having to turn the flute away quite a bit, though maybe that’s me! practise makes perfect! For the price and the short waiting time I reckon it’s a good deal. I’ll try to take some pics soon!

So how does the price of a Cotter compare to that of a Hamilton?

same price, well 5 eu’s less! I was looking for a flute for under £400 that I would’nt have to wait too long for - I got the cotter in two months. I must try out a hamilton some time - how do they compare?

It’s not very clear…

Thanks Chih.
Great picture.
Can’t wait for mine to arrive!
Best,
Jeroen

I just got (couple of weeks ago) my 6-key Cotter. A beautiful flute, powerful, expressive, in tune, harder to play than my M&E, but not too hard, overall. I’m very happy with it.

I just ordered a keyless Cotter flute I can’t wait to get it. I am happy to hear that you like your flute

So how long was/is the wait for a Keyed Cotter?

Loren

I just talked to Eamonn yesterday. He said it is currently 18 months for a 6 key. Real nice guy by the way.

Loren..or anyone, does Patrick make a fully keyed (8key) flute and do you know the price and waiting period?

Craig,

Thanks for the info.

I’ve never asked Patrick about 8 key flutes, but the printed information he sent me about ordering indicates that he is not currently offering flutes with keyed foot joints, so a 6 key is the most he’ll do.

The list price indicated is $2695. for a 6 key with Sterling Slide and Rings - $150 less if you go with Nickel.

The price list states the wait for a keyed flute at 3-4 years. However, it also says 9-12 months for a keyless, and at the time Chris and I received our flutes, Pat was running at around 15 months or so for keyless…Don’t know if this affects keyed flute delivery times or not, probably best to ask Patrick directly.

Loren

P.S. Much as I want a Keyed Olwell, the best I can do for the moment is imagine this one with keys…

Wow…what a gorgous instrument!

Thanks for the info Loren.

What’s that fricken cyborg looking thing above it? Some newage anti-theft device?

To be honest, the photo isn’t that great - the flute looks even better in person.

“Thanks for the info Loren.”

You’re Welcome.

Why yes, that’s it…it’s a…Compact Thermonuclear Olwell Anti-Theft Device…Yeah, that’s the ticket.

Seriously though, it’s a Compact Thermonuclear Olwell…Humidifier. I couldn’t crop it out of the photo without lopping off part of the flute so…

It’s actually a Planet Waves brand Violin/Guitar case humidifier. I believe they make them in two sizes, and this is the smaller of the two. It works pretty well: The Humidifier has a “Special” sort of foam inside that not prone to leaking (when used properly) - it comes with a needless syringe that you used to inject 10cc of water into the humidifier through that little hole. I think the cost was 12 or 15 bucks, I got mine at Sam Ash or Mars.

Cocus wood looks awesome, Loren! Mine has darkened over the 150 years.

Yeah, Cocus is a beautiful thing, ain’t it?

My flute is actually a little darker and slightly less Red and more Brown than it appears in the photo.

Anyone else got something interesting to post a photo of…Uh to be clear I’m thinking wooden flutes here folks, let’s keep it clean, okay? Unless Dale is going to post some of his Wild Asian Teens stuff
