Apology to the surly and non-surly alike

It has come into my awareness, years late, that some of you have been offended by my use of the word “surly” in connection with this forum. I apologize. I didn’t mean that to offend. It is true that my perception, perhaps flawed, has been that there’s a bit more trouble on this forum than on the others, but I sincerely didn’t mean to hurt feelings.

Anyone who takes offence at being called surly clearly isn’t a real piper  .

But the least that one can expect is that those of a surly disposition should turn in their shooting irons to the sheriff’s office for the duration of their stay in the peace-loving community of C&F.

Glad you said that. I started to suggest in my post that I meant it as a complement, but I thought no one would believe it.

Dale,

I thought you meant “surely” like… “surely your kidding,” “no I’m not and stop calling me Shirley.”

Surly, isn’t that a light chicken gravy with yams?

Well, that all makes sense now, surly, hmmmmmm, well now I am offended you conceited…

Timmy
Yes I am, and stop calling me Surly, :swear:

Interestingly*, surly started out meaning something wholly different: masterful or lordly.

  • well, I think so anyway. If you disagree well, you can just go and…

If these](http://www.surlybrewing.com/index.php%3Ethese) people can do business, then surely we can too.

The only reason I am attempting to learn to strangle the octopus is because I want the “surly” moniker.

Don’t ruin it for me. Please.

I take great offense that you should purport to tell me what I am, or am not, offended by. I believe that I am well able to take offense at whatever I may choose, and can hand out offense with the best of them. And further more … but that will have to wait. Here comes the nurse with my medication.

You got off easy this time, but I’m watching you. :really:

You’re seriously apologizing to a forum (unum e pluribus, certainly) that’s so surly by definition that people quit it in disgust?

For shame, Dale. Perhaps you need to be more surly.

Stuart

Born in County Tyrone in Northern Ireland, character actor Gerard McSorley has played a lot of bad guys during his prolific acting career.

 Surly?? How dare you say I’m surly! I’d fight you myself for calling me surly if I wasn’t working on this damn reel !!!

Indeed, and how you manage to type while in both arm and leg restraints is a marvel to us all!

t

Don’t encourage him. He’ll probably claim to be typing with his catheter.

:really: ← Surly emoticon

If anyone is actually offended here at being called surly, it must be a very small portion of this board, and they are probably the surliest of the lot.

Nope. Thermometer. Other end. :really:

Okay, now it’s time to not encourage ME.

SURLY?

Indeed surly is in the eye of the beholder.

I’ve noticed a dedicated streak of tenacity and rugged individualism amongst uilleann pipers over the years. Certainly the very nature of the instrument demands this from its players, and we can be a very strange lot sometimes.

Dale, I think you and the moderators are doing a fine job. Apologies, if any should be made those who take all of this far too seriously! Come on…We’re not making solid plans about burning down ophranages nor scamming the elderly, right?

I’m at a loss to put this more diplomatically…in theory everyone posting on this forum are adults or at least old enough to have some sense of other people. Maybe those without a sense of humor or those so volatile that they respond everything as a personal offense need more help than can be offered here?

a few days ago I had the smart ass idea of posting a pole to vote on who is the most SURLY of us all, but I feared Joesph E would beat me with a huge double reed, so I surily showed restraint :smiling_imp:
