Anyone know of note recognition software through a PC mic?

I’m looking for something to help me practice switching between registers (and also just to check what note I’m playing and whether I’m sharp or flat).

The guitar tuning software I’ve tried isn’t really suitable as you have to choose a note first then play. I just want to be able to play into the PC microphone and have it show what note it thinks I’m playing.

Any thoughts?

(There is something along these lines for harmonicas, the delightfully entitled Bendometer. It’s good but not that great for whistles.)

Any chromatic tuner will do that. There are lots of freeware and shareware tuners out there. I recommend checking versiontracker.com.

Here’s the one I use:

I’d just get a chromatic tuner. Those things are invaluable for practicing and improving intonation.

Thanks for the advice. I wasn’t aware of chromatic tuners and I’ve tried a few now.

In my mind I had something a bit more friendly to play to than the usual dial/speedometer-type display. Perhaps a piano keyboard or just a line of notes that light up when you play them.

That one looks excellent.

Thanks again for the help.

You might also have a look at the software tuner G-Tune. It’s a nice device:)

It can also be rigged to output the note it hears in a midi format.
