This thing is both beautiful in appearance and beautiful in tone. It is essentially a D whistle with a low Cn for the bottom hand little finger. There are also two back holes - Fn and Bb.
A fully functional D/C whistle.
Keep the two back holes covered with your thumbs (very easy to do) and ignore the low Cn hole and it plays just like a regular D whistle.
The extra holes greatly reward extra practice put into it.
Note: the back holes ARE easy to cover with the thumbs and they are in the center of the back; the low Cn hole is on its own section of the whistle (i.e., rotatable). Thus, this thing is played just as easily by a left-hander or a right-hander.
I’ve owned it for 10 months now.
I really like this one. A very pretty whistle. Super Abell tone and I’d say ever so slightly louder than my Abell blackwood.
I don’t know whether or not I’ll sell it. This is a feeler to find out if there is any interest. I’m quite torn - I love Abell’s work/sound/playability; and this has afforded me the ability to remain on one whistle throughout the evening. But I also could use money in the near future. I do have an Abell C and an Abell D.
Chris did not charge any extra for using pink ivorywood, but due to the separate bottom section (with the extra work and extra silver involved), it cost me $450.00, and that was a year ago, when his Ds and Cs were $300.00 each. I imagine this would cost $500.00 to have made today.
I would like to get what I paid if I do let it go.
It is in pristine condition - I swab out every time, oil regularly, and store my wooden whistles and flutes in a humidor year-round.
