I’d been wanting to get an iPod Touch with WiFi to replace my Palm Tungsten but held off because 1)I couldn’t use the ePocrates drug database on the iPod Touch and 2)I didn’t want to hand transfer all of my contacts one by one. However, now you CAN get ePocrates for this device, and I found out how to transfer all of my Palm contacts, so I’m getting a new second generation Touch. In the meantime, I’ve been borrowing my daughter-in-law’s Touch (she got an iPhone).
This thing is killer fun! I bought a flight sim for it which is excellent and have downloaded quite a few free apps: Google Earth, Labyrinth, a WiFi program that lets you check local movie times, weather, etc. I also put 200 photos from our China trip in there so when people ask to see pictures, I can oblige them. Haven’t even started putting music in it, but I will.
Anyone else out there using one of these? Have any favorite apps? Case recommendations? Hints?
BTW-- on an iPod forum, I found out that it’s considered very bad form to call it an iTouch: it’s an iPod Touch. Go figure…
Mr Izz doesn’t have the iPod Touch, but he does have an iPhone, and he was SUPER psyched about the ePocrates drug database. It has been invaluable to him during nursing school, and I’m sure will be even more so after he graduates in May
I don’t think he really knows yet. He comes from a long line of psychiatric nurses, so he might go that route. He did like the clinical rotation when he was doing that. And we have a huge state psychiatric hospital here, so he’d have plenty of places to choose from in terms of work. But in the end, I don’t think he’s made his decision. He’s still doing his Med/Surg rotations this semester and next, and he seems to like it.
In other words, I have no idea I don’t think he’s done much with OR nursing as of yet…and I’m not sure if that would be something he’d like anyway. I am pretty sure he has to do 2 years of Med/Surg anyway, so he has some time to think.
We just bought one. Look for a case that has a prop-up feature. This would be really helpful on a plane, for instance, so you could put it on the tray table instead of having to hold it. (Helpful for watching movies, though if you don’t use it for this, the prop-up feature isn’t so helpful is it?)
There’s a pretty big community over at iLounge, as well. Their iPod Touch forum is right here.
(Psst: You’re calling it iTouch again! They’re going to string you up…)
I have the first generation iPod Touch, and I hacked it to get the iPhone apps onboard, but I guess the new ones are configured to include all that fonctionality. Maybe I’ll have to reformat mine to factory settings and install the software updates now; I’ll have to check into the forums about that. I’ve mostly just been using the thing as a standard iPod lately, though I’ve used it to check e-mail and browse the web a couple times when stuck waiting for public transit somewhere where I could get a WiFi signal.

Just call me an old iconoclast…
iTouch makes more sense… you have iPod, iPhone (both with an “i” and then a nice one syllable word), so why not iTouch? Everyone knows that it’s really an iPod.
