4000+ ITM tunes in ABC for iPhone

Someone on the on the stringed instrument forum just pointed me to a new iPhone app that has 4000+ ITM (and a few non-irish) tunes in ABC format. I just downloaded it and it seems very good. You can search for tunes several ways.

The app is brand new, and hopefully the developer will be open to adding a few things in the future: One thing I’d really like to see is the ability to bookmark the tunes you want and organize them into “tunebooks” within the app.

If you want to check it out at the Apple App store, you can find it by searching for TradTunes, which is the name of the application. Seems well worth the $1.99 price

Loren

Yes, it looks like it’s well worth it. How can you go wrong for $2?
The only problem is that you have to put it on a $300 appliance…

 True! Only helpful for those of us who already have said $300. appliance. I need the appliance for work, so it is coming in very handy for my recreational pursuits :stuck_out_tongue:

Loren

My wife and I both have them and IMHO they’re worth every penny ($200.00 as we have the 8 gig models). Where else can you get a cell phone, a video playing iPod, a GPS, a Web browser, email access, a Peterson Strobotuner, Amazing Slow Downer, and now 4,000 ITM tunes all in one compact package that you can take anywhere. I have a huge music library and a bunch of ITM videos on mine. I can even use a tv-out plug and watch the videos on TV.

It works for me anyway.

And how could you forget Kirk: It’s also a personal recording device, for lessons, sessions, summer camps, concerts, etc., and camera for taking pictures at same. Heck, the new one coming out has a video camera built in - although I’m doubtful the video quality will be worth much.

Loren

LOL, I was sitting here waiting to hit the submit button knowing full-well that I was forgetting some other key features. How could I forget the camera. Doh!

i’m saving up my pennies for one of them things .
i like it , i want it , and i want it now ..

so , if it can have the Amazing Slow Downer , can it also have Quick Time ?

if some one has got that , can you tell me if you can drop a vid into it , as on the Mac , and then do an a/v control , which gives variable speed and pitch ?

the Mac , just the Job , the dark side , mwahahahaaaaaaaaa

I have the Google G1 and its video is really decent for a cell phone! And the camera is actually pretty good (better than my outmoded digital camera!). Not so many apps, though … but I have hope for the future.

Being able to play WordUp! while sister drones on and on … priceless.

What is the source of the ABCs in this app?

Holy chud! A drone app for these things. YES. A cell Shruti box … how cool would that be! ??

Cathy , are you talking about this kind of thing ?

and does your sister sound like that ?

great to play against it , with fiddle , for tuning and improv.
haven’t really tried it with flute yet , need longer to warm up first .

Jim,

The Quicktime player on the on the iPhone doesn’t have the AV controls like the Mac or PC desktop version does so you need an app like ASD to slow down the file.

The only gotcha with ASD on the iPhone is that you can’t use the files that are already in your music library on the phone because of the DRM (Digital Rights Management) constraints. You have to transfer songs from your computer using the ASD app on the iPhone and make a separate music library on the phone for ASD files.

Hope this answers your question,

Kirk

Curious - what do you mean by ABC format on a phone. Yes, I know what ABC coding for music is - but I presume the phone just plays it as a digital file. That’s not music or ITM, just a digital representation of the bare bones of someone’s transcription of a tune. Which is a lot of if’s!!

OMG!!! I never thought to look for sound files online!!! I LOVE YOU!!!

That’s exactly what I want to use it for. I keep meaning to buy a physical version, but never get around to it.

If my sister only sounded so musical !!!

Thank you so much!!!

The phone is not meant to play audio using the ABC.
You’re meant to bring it up and look at it so you can
remember how to play the tune. You will go to the
app and choose, say, Drowsy Maggie, and you’ll see
this text:

X: 1
T: Drowsy Maggie
M: 4/4
L: 1/8
K: Edor
|:E2BE dEBE|E2BE AFDF|E2BE dEBE|BABc dAFD:|
d2fd c2ec|defg afge|d2fd c2ec|BABc dAFA|
d2fd c2ec|defg afge|afge fdec|BABc dAFD|

Then you can look at the letters between the |s and
know which notes to play. Maybe one day they’ll get
around to showing it as sheet music instead.

Oh I see - it’s kinda of an '‘aide memoir’ or whatever. There’s an old fella at a session I play in and he takes a little notebook now & then which has the first few bars of each tune. I suppose that’s the low tech version  So, this saves you writing them out in the notebook .. but, then they mightn’t be the version you play .. hmm

Edited.

Oh, sorry, I missed your previous post.

Actually, I’m specifically curious if the source of the ABCs is apparent to end users here who have purchased the app.
