Seems like it would be easy to cross-check a few tunes against thesession.org, which strikes me as the most likely place. Seems like relatively unusual tunes would be the best – there are probably dozens of sources online for “Drowsy Maggie”, but if it’s got, say, “Slow Road to East China”, you can be sure it came from thesession.
And Cathy, if you get me a G1 I’ll be happy to work on a tunes app for it…
Cathy , i’m deeply touched , but my mam says i can’t play with you , we haven’t been properly introduced.
does anyone else have the trouble with the present day abc’s notation , that i have ?
great way to send tunes and it’s fine to cut and paste into say the Tun-O-Tron , and then get your staff notation handed to you on a Heidelberg Offset .
( imagine having one of those , as your preferred printer , you’d have to take out the coffee table , at least )
but the amount of numerics , symbols , squiggles , have gone beyond the tune as i would have been able to read with ease .
and mr far fetched , i would expect a machine of this calibre / price , to a least make an effort to play the tune
I originally posted the info on the trad music board. Its a useful app as a replacement for a printed cheet sheet. As far as the source for the ABC, its not clear from the app, one could contact the developer and ask…
Sol, sure, I’ll send you a G1, sure (FWIW, it’s very cool and cheaper than the iPhone (but wait. Does that make my G1 a MeToo Phone?); let me just see what I’ve got in the ol’ spare change jar …
I wrote the developer at his fiddlemeragged dot mac address throwing out the idea of a G1 app (with me as a beta tester, of course), but the mail got bounced – the address doesn’t work. I may have to threaten him or her with my “Fahylated” version of The Luck Penny.
Sounds like
someone
needs to write a mini-/pseudo-midi patch for the iPhone so you could just play the first few bars of the tune, just to remind yourself how it starts … ?
I wish I was clever. Will Macaulay, where are you? 5-Line Skink for the G1!!! 5-Line Skink for the G1!!!
Oh well, guess I’ll just have to stick with the analog method for now.
I think this varies a lot from person to person, Jim. ABC is exactly the same as the dots in a different guise. It’s like reading printed text vs. handwritten cursive. Once you’re comfortable with the new “alphabet”, the rest follows.
I can read and play ABC squiggles directly maybe 80% as fast as dots, depending on the tune. Yes, as with any skill, that took a bit of practice.
As for playing audio … personally I’d rather hear a tune in my mind’s ear than be assaulted with a robo-setting anyway. But audio rendering would be a function of the $2 application, not a limitation of the iPhone itself.
MT , i’m not really miffed about the sound thing on the phone , i just have a reputation as a grumpy ould scheidt , and have to maintain that image ,
looking forward to getting an iPhone , as they are the biz .
and when i do , i’ll learn the abc’s with all the squiggles .
and the robo sound ? i dream of having a tone like that , and he never seems to have to take a breath .
what do you think , maybe if i apply myself for a year ?

Whoops sorry about that, I only noticed this morning that the e-mail address used dot mac and not dot me as I only recently set up the alias. I’ll fix it tonight, Friday. (The address should be fiddlemeragged at me dot com.)
Unfortunately I don’t have the time to make a G1 app but if someone does want to, I’d gladly pass on any details which could help.
I’ve had quite a number of suggestions for improvements already and am looking at them - but I only get a couple of hours a week at the moment to work on the applications.
(The reason I wrote it was that I was fed up with carrying lots of books around and I was using it myself for a while before I released it - hence the simplicity.)
