Amazing Slower Downer now on iPhone/iPod Touch

Just noticed that they’ve ported the app over to the iPhone/iPod Touch, now available on the iTunes App Store…

OK and its only $15 have you used it?
And if so can you give us a mini review?

I haven’t tried it yet. I was hoping the Transcribe! devs would port their app to the iPhone, but I know many people here are fans of ASD…

I still recommend the program Best Practice. You can slow down a song or make it faster or change the pitch.

And the best thing is that its all for free.

Kind of off-topic. But why? That is, since several programs can do what you describe, what makes you favor that one?

This is great news, Michael. The last I’d heard, the ASD folks could not get around the music protection scheme for playing music on the iPhone/iPod-Touch. I had given up hope of this app ever happening.

The reason some of us are excited about this news is that this software now resides on such a small, portable device. Fits right in your case. No more hauling around the lap top.

Sorry for the OT but since eskin mentioned a price of 15 $ for the Ipod program I thought that people might be interested in a free one. And thats the reason why I favor Best Practice because its free, very small seize and very practical

Fair enough! I just DL’d and tried Best Practice, and it does seem to work OK.

I find a waveform display very helpful when learning tunes or writing transcriptions. It makes it easier to see the phrasing and articulation. So I prefer Transcribe or Audacity. But I could live without the waveform in a portable app.

Regarding ASD, the folks at Apple didn’t open up the iPhone all the way. It appears that you have to have a wireless connection to a computer where the music file resides for ASD to use it. I.e. music files residing locally on the iPhone (or iPod touch) can not be used. This is crummy. If I’m off at music camp, away from my computer, I can’t use it. At least that’s what I gather from the fine print at roni music. This makes this app not very attractive to me.

I haven’t tried it yet either but my impression was that you need to download the music from your computer once, separate from your iTunes files. After that, you should be able to use it without a computer.

There is hope for the situation improving in the future, too. The next version of the iPhone OS (due sometime this summer) will allows apps to have “access to the iPod® music library” (http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2009/03/17iphone.html). Hopefully the ASD app will be able to take advantage of that.

In general iPhone apps work in their own ‘sandbox’ and do not have access to files of other programs (unless you jailbrake - in which case you hopefully know what you’re doing - personally I’m have not done it and I’m not going there so I can’t help), with the upcoming OS3.0 they are giving any app access to a users sound files in their ‘iPod Library’ but from what the ASD folks say only the ability to play the file and not to do anything with it. Personally I have not dug that deep yet so I don’t know.

So… seems like you will have to load your files to the application - similar to having to load them to the iPod application only you can’t use iTunes so its going to be not as easy, or put another way ‘more geeky’. Which means you might end up with two copies on your phone - or just don’t use the iPod app to listen to the files you want slow down. Not elegant which what the iPhone is supposed to be about. Well at least you can copy and paste in 3.0, but of course you can’t an audio stream.

I just tried this one out. It worked fine except for tunes stored in my iTunes library. It wouldn’t open them, and when I tried to drag a file directly from iTunes to Best Practice, it freaked out on me, giving me several error messages before locking up. The only thing I can figure is that it must not be compatible with ACC files.
Which is not a problem, really. I can convert them to mp3 easily enough, but I thought I’d give a heads up to anyone else that tries it.

Aw crap! I don’t have a wi-fi connection to my computer via my ipod Touch. Does it warn of this somewhere?!

That’s $15 bucks down the toilet. :imp: :imp: :imp:

There must be a refund system in place? Maybe on the receipt they email out there will be details?

Good luck,

Pat.

Yeah, I now read the important warnings. It’s an Apple thing. Hey! bwilson! Can’t you talk to someone about this :frowning:

I knew it was too good to be true. A slow downer, man

I don’t really know anything about it, but as I suggested, it seems likely to me that this limitation of ASD will go away with iPhoneOS 3.0. Hopefully they’ll give free upgrades to a new version of the app and your $15 will not be wasted. You just have to wait a few months…which should be nothing compared to waiting for a new set of pipes
