This series of transcriptions is really great. Please continue! I think I have discovered a few minor mistakes in Rolling the Rye grass, and this seems to be the right place to post them.
So here you go:
Bar 6: second beat, {cut}AG instead of {cut}GB
Bar 7: FAAF instead of FAAB
Bar 10: (and 14) fedB instead of fdBd
Bar 12: afaf instead of afdf
I also have a suggestion: you often refer to “what might be expected by a listener familiar with the tune” or “the way such-and-such a thing would be played in a standard version”. For the benefit of someone who does not know the tune, or knows a different version from the one you have in mind, how about providing a reference, maybe in the form of musical notation (with minimal ornamentation, eg only “obvious” rolls) of a “standard version”. It seems to me that this would make the commentary easier to follow.
Otherwise, the idea of comparing several versions of one tune by different players (and why not different instruments?) sounds like a very good one.
Quite a few mistakes actually, maybe I should check the notations next time before sending them off.
I’ll check them, but it will be a while before we fix them as Steve is on holidays.
Am at the moment in the process of selecting tunes for the next batch of notations, I have set aside a number of tunes recorded when I did a few concerts with Micho Russell in 1986. The tape had been sitting there since that time until I stumbled onto it today and for the first time listened to it. There are some lovely solo tracks by Micho, both on flute and whistle. There is a version of Rolling in the Ryegrass that explores some different corners compared to Kieran Collins’ verion. I hope to make a comparison between the two. Eventually.
Well, I was revisiting this clip earlier, and once again I was left with the question: Isn’t there more? It always seemed so abrupt with it cut off like that. Was the recording itself stopped at that point, or is the rest of it available, and if so, could I have it?
No there was a lot more. At the time there wa a glitch in my software that made it impossible to create small files so I limited the length of it all to stay under the 1 MB, sent it to Steve who converted the file to a smaller one. I since downloaded the software again to fix the problem.
I nthe clip he played Rolling in the Ryegras three times before going into the Boyne Hunt, which I intende to write down at a later date but never did. Maybe I should as he did quite a nice job on it.
