I’m 17 too… I started a long time ago, but I’m teaching my friend and she’s doing fine. My Dad started aged about 30. If you can get out to pubs that’d be great, even though it would mean a lot of listening and not a lot if any playing. There are a lot of young people playing in Australia and you’d make friends and have some fun. My sister was in Sydney not long ago (she made loads of friends through music), I’ll ask her where the sessions are and let you know.
17 too late? I started when I was 33! And now I’m teaching the darned instrument, twenty-one years later. Not that it took me that long to learn! (LOL)

I can’t seem to tap my foot for long, and when I do, my feet follow my fingers’ tempo rather than the other way around. But the fact is I’ve watched, and the players I most enjoy are usually tapping away.
Some toe tap.
Some heel tap.
Some stomp.
Some rock heel to toe.
It’s interesting to watch!
When I try to keep to a metronome I lose all the swing of the tune. I’m rhythm impaired, I think. My best chance at keeping the beat and the swing is playing along with others. I get hauled along with the tune.

You say that only because you can’t see us frothing at the mouth with jealousy that you’re getting the chance to start so young in life…
