Hi all,
I just joined this message board and thought I’d just write and say hi, so, HI!!! I’m a teen and new to learning the pennywhistle but I love it sooo much. I can already play 3 or 4 tunes and I’m having a blast learning it. I was really glad to find this message board!!!

Hey Sarah,
I am wondering if I know you. Sounds kind of odd, but do you play the hammer Dulcimer. Because if you did I probley do know you. But either way I am a teen and I play the Irish Flute (badly) and penny whistle. And welcome to the club!

Welcome, Sara
Have great fun learning the whistle. There’s no end to what you can learn. Ask away any questions you have. They won’t be considered dumb. No one minds repeating things that have been said before. (Lots of us like to hear ourselves talk.) Don’t believe everything you read. Some people are kidding, and some are crazy. And don’t get carried away buying tons of whistles. You can only play one at a time (except for those people who say they play them from their nostrils.)

Welcome Sara!
Tonys right, of course…ask away.
There are no dumb questions..only dumb answers (usually the ones I give!)

LKtz,
I’ve never even heard of it. Is it a song? Cool that you’re a teen too. I was wondering how many kids would be on here, I thought it would be mainly adults. Cool that you play the Irish Flute. How long have you played the pennywhistle?

TonyHiggins,
Thanks, I’m already having fun!!! It’s such a pretty instrument! Okay, thanks, that’s one reason why I joined this message board, if I had any questions, I figured this would be a good place to look for the answers! I look forward to posting more on this board.

Wondering_Whistler

Yow, it’s only the beginning of the month, and already the smiley jar’s running low!

Sara,

Welcome - you’ll rarely see a post from me, as I lurk on the few occasions I find muself here (not to reflect anything negative upon the board, that’s just me! ) Your post caught my eye because I thought for a minute that a friend of mine had posted it as a joke - my name is Sara (no H!) and I’m a teen new to the whistle as well…

Oh, and by the way - the Hammered Dulcimer is an instrument that I’d like to learn but haven’t had the opportunity to yet  - see http://www.rtpnet.org/~hdweb/</a](http://www.rtpnet.org/~hdweb/">http://www.rtpnet.org/~hdweb/</a)> for plenty of info!

Happy Whistling,
Sara

Well the reason I thought I knew you was I have a friend I met at celtic camp who plays the hammar Dulcimer, and her name is Sarah. She just started Tin Whistle and I had given her the Chiff and Fipple website address. So my bad. On another note I just start Irish Flute after having played classical for a few years, so I am not great at Irish Flute yet. But good luck with your whistle playing!

Hey Sara! Welcome to the board! You’ll definitely find lots of information here on whistles. It’ll be most rewarding because you get to learn a lot about playing whistles, advice and the like from more experienced players, like I have been doing. Enjoy yourself. Btw, teen here too!

Hi Sara,
Welcome to the messageboard. I hope you find lots of valuable stuff here, as I have, and rest assured that this is perhaps the only place on the web which is not corrupted by abusive “flame wars”. Thank heaven for that!!!

Best Wishes, Adrian

Hi Sarah,
Welcome to THE PLACE for whistlers on the web, once we get to know you better we will fill you in on out plan to dominate the world, but don’t tell anyone about it okay? We want it to be a surprise

DixieWhistler,
Wow, that’s weird that you’re a teen and your name is also Sara!!! I went to that website you mentioned, and right then I thought, I knew the Dulcimer was an instrument. I should have thought before I asked. When did you start playing the whistle?

Eldarion,
I can already tell I’ll find lots of info here. I didn’t know the pennywhistle was that popular an instrument - I certainly didn’t think I’d find a message board specifically for the pennywhistle. I’m glad I did. Cool that you’re a teen!:):)

adriancarrington,
I have been to other message boards for different interests and such. And somehow, the members would always start talking about bad things, or they’d use offensive language. And you’re right, so far this is the ONLY message board on the web where that doesn’t happen. :smile:I think that’s great.

Cheerio,
§ara

Hi Sara,

Welcome to the list. I was a teenager once… I think…

Isn’t this a great bunch of people. I am fairly new to the tinwhistle, and this list myself. Ask any question, and you get all kinds of helpful suggestions and comments in return. It really is one of the kinder and gentler boards I have belonged to.

Blaine

Sara,

Again, welcome. This is a very nice bunch of people, which from what I’ve heard is somewhat unique on the web. But, as has already been said, don’t believe everything you hear. For example, the thing about not aquiring too many whistles. I’m not sure it’s possible to aquire too many whistles, although I’m trying. (: And only being able to play one at a time? I always thought that 's what tabor pipes are for…I mean, why else would God have given us TWO nostrils?

Anyway, welcome. It’s always good to have some young new talent!
God bless.
Tom

Sara, you “…thought it would be mainly adults” here on C&F. Do you mean age, attitude, or behavior?   We are generally serious about our instruments and music, but that’s serious as in devoted, fascinated, and occasionally obsessed, not as in pompous, or self-important, or lacking-in-bizarrity. Responsible Adult is perhaps just a front some use to earn a living; our real personas are visible among other whistlers … I’m thinking Higgins, Hoover, McHaffie … no; too many to list

One teen on-board (at least he’s a teen for a few more weeks) is Daniel Turley – he’s not always active - I think he’s a college sophmore or something now - but you can hear some of his whistling on mp3.com : http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/137/daniel_turley.html . For that matter, check some of the links there for a listen to other C&F folks, and since you’re new you may not yet know about the Clips & Snips site, where a bunch of us have posted mp3 recordings of whistle tunes: http://www.mchaffiewhistles.com/clipsnip/

What tunes are you already playing?

Welcome to whistledom!

Sara –

I think I’ve been playing since March, although the fact that I’m actually “playing” is debatable, sometimes I think I’m just “making noise…” I suppose it’s safest just to say that I bought my first whistle sometime around then.

My biggest problem is practicing – I can’t stand to practice when I know someone is listening, so I only really play when I’m the only one home. I so envy the ones here who take their whistles to the park or in the car, etc.!

~S~

jbgibson,
I meant age mostly. I didn’t think that many teens would play the pennywhistle. From what I have gathered, I can tell you all are extremely serious about the pennywhistle and I think that’s totally cool! I’ll go to that MP3.com. I’m curious to hear his whistle playing. I have never heard of the Clips & Snips site, I’m looking forward to going there. I’ve only been playing the whistle for 2 weeks, so I can’t play a lot of songs, but I can play “First Jig”, “First Waltz” and “First March” I just finished learning the “First March” and I still have trouble with it, but I can play it. Now I’m working on “First Reel”. Is there a “first” theme going on…
Cheerio,
~§ara~
P.S. Thanks for the welcome!

Phew! I thought it was all old people on this board. Just kidding.

Yup, I’m a teen too… (as well?) Nice to see I’m not alone in my enjoyment of the pennywhistle.

Are you using the Step One Learn to Play the Pennywhistle book? That’s about the only book I have of sheet music. It’s got some nice songs in it… once you get past all the ‘first somethings’

Speaking of teens, I just heard from our young friend Kardshark. It seems he is plunging into WHOA with full abandon. He told me that he just placed an order with Thom for:

a walton’s little black d
a clark original “just to mess around w/”
a susato (C)
a susato (low D).
a dixon (D)
He also says he “can’t wait for them to get here.”

I told him he needs to post this on the board so we can all coo and ooh-ahh about his new whistles and generally make Mark proud of us all.
