Uilliam, you’re right. Zukul’s topic was to solicit information about Rogge chanters.
His initial search was to find a maker in the UK. All I did was point out Davy is in the UK and makes what he’s looking for. Why are you so offended by this?
Zukul, having a listing on the NPU does NOT qualify ones status as a pipemaker, nor does make you an honest or reliable businessman.
The NPU does not endorse any pipemakers products and indicates this on their website: http://www.pipers.ie/en/wherebuyset.html look on page 2.
I think you will have to see for yourself whether you like them or not, the Rogge discussion has been up before, Liam jumping in in favour getting fierce worked up if the comments are less favourable. You just have to make up your own mind. Yes some people favour his pipes, no some people don’t want have anything to do with them. Wellknown pipers play them, some wellknown players had them and couldn’t get rid of them soon enough. Balance your opinion between the ones who do play them and the ones who don’t and the reasons they have for doing so.
It’s your own decision and your own taste that matters, please yourself.

Larry M..good to hear from you. Been worried
about you! Now I know, and kinda agree. This
board, like any ship, has occasional rough
rides, but we seem to make it through even
when the wind blows hard at times. Gotta be
a sailor at heart to stay on board. I’ve
always appreciated your comments, and those
of everyone in fact.
That’s interesting that some great pipers
couldn’t get rid of Rogge pipes fast enough.
I’ve heard they can be a little loud and
hard. I’d like to try a set.
What I’ve also found interesting is that
some pretty famous pipers who have purchased
newer pipes still prefer their old Rowsome
chanters, or Rowesome designed chanters. I
would have never known this if someone
hadn’t posted the links on this forum for
me to read. I’ve always found this forum
very instructive and have corrected several
things about my chnater and reed because of
it.
BTW, anyone else having a problem with the
width of a sentence on this page? I’ve been
panning across forever it seems to read one
sentence. I’m hitting the “return” button
to keep the width short.

Lorenzo, when Uilliam stated all the makers in the UK without using spaces between the names, chiffboard has no option but to run the entire line as if it were one word.
Getting back to the original question, if I may . . .
I’ve had a narrow-bore half-set in D by Andreas for a couple of years. It’s quite nice. The only trouble I had at all was with the chanter reed which didn’t like my hot/humid climate. Seth Gallagher made me a great one. Andreas’s stuff is fantastic, and the narrow-bore chanter is very responsive and has a great tone.
I do recommend a dense wood for it . . . not one to get in boxwood. Try ebony or something like that. Mine’s snakewood, which is NICE and hard. It makes a great chanter.
I thought I might add that my chanter, although wide bore and reeded by Andreas himself, isn’t loud or harsh at all. It very much depends on how the reed is adjusted, I think. I know that Andreas likes to make his sets play loud and crispy, but he can do anything you tell him. I also noticed that the D set he made for me is a bit smaller and more “delicate” than, say, the set he made for Peter Browne.
Know what you want and you get what you want…
Christian
Liam, don’t misread the fact that Davy actually pays attention to these forums and responds to the questions raised with self-promotion. As far as I can tell, he is the only pipemaker who bothers to talk here (I could be wong though).
And for that matter even if it is/was self-promotion, who cares? It’s not like he is spamming the list with adverts for herbal viagra. His posts are on topic and reflect his experience as a pipemaker and a businessman.
There is one person who always is in the thick of these little flame wars…
read that as you will.
Stuart,
while different woods yield different sounds, so does a pipers preference.
It’s been noted many vintage flats sets were made in boxwood and various fruitwoods. Inherently, a lower pitched chanter is more mellow than one of a higher pitch. wouldn’t it be more desirable to want a narrow bore D in a mellow wood rather than a brilliant sounding wood to intentionally make the instrument sweeter sounding?
I am awfully disappointed to see that once again, the disease of flame wars and rudeness have insinuated themselves into uillean lists. However, I am glad to see people have come to the defense of the “attacked”. I am hoping not to add to the fray, but Liam makes some points that have NO RELEVANCE to the discussion.
NPU does NOT endorse pipers, nor “register” them in any way. They simply “list” them as does Mr. D’Arcy. So to insinuate that NPU provides a stamp of approval is ridiculous and IS* an inferencial derogatory statement directed to Mr. Stephenson, suggesting that in some way he is not “accepted” or part of the “in crowd”.
I believe Mr. Stephenson was reacting to inferences like this that you have indeed made in the past. Your overall tone suggests an insulting and rude attitude. I am not implying that this is your INTENT*, but the result. It is the unfortunate characteristic of the keyboard that even the most innocent of comments (as perceived by the typer) can be taken as the greatest of insult. In reviewing the posts made by yourself Uilleam (Liam) one DOES find a tendency on your part towards aggressive comments. During a discussion regarding female makers, you responded repeatedly by rudely attacking ANYONE who even remotely veered off-topic.
I have lurked here for quite some time, and your claim of “self-promotion” on Davy’s part is plain and simply unfounded. Davy has made comments that have added to the quality of discussion. Because he simply adds data and experiencial information gained from making pipes is NOT self-promotion. To place a ban on pipe-makers is purely ridiculous.
This post is not intended as a “flame”, nor an attack on yourself Liam. Mr. STephenson has very wisely and appropriately suggested any further issues be conducted off-list. I find this to be a very constructive suggestion. Perhaps in the future, since you seem unable to get along, it might be best to simply avoid posting regarding each other?
