You’re damn tootin it is. They are making at least two new seasons. i’m just not sure if they are going to air of Cartoon network, or Fox. You have to love a Dog that drinks Martinis, a Baby with a football shaped head and a diabolical mind, and a Father who’s chin looks like a set of… giggle berries.
Personally, I thought the best adult cartoon was The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show.
They were funny when I was a kid and when I grew up some, they were roll in the floor funny.
The ABSOLUTE BEST for entertaining the kids and keeping the adults in stitches too is:

Talk about hidden and subversive humor!!! I cannot think of anything at the moment but that cartoon is just chock full of inuendo and side jokes for adults. Funny thing is that even though the humor was geared to the times, a lot of it still applies to today’s climate as well.
Actually, Warner Bros. cartoons in general were quite funny and irreverant.
The Disney folks were pretty wacky as well.
I have a recording of Donald Duck getting a Lewinski that’s hilarious.
I wonder if Walt ever heard Mel do that one?
Rocky and Bullwinkle would be quite funny on their own, but I think all of the side-bits (e.g. Fractured Fairy Tales) really gave it a kick! 
Another show I find especially funny is Batman. I swear, there must be a gag every 30 seconds or so in every episode!

Is it just me, or are the drawings in the cartoons first mentioned in this thread really really ugly?
I think King of the Hill and Daria are okay. The Simpsons style doesn’t appeal to me much. None of them are particularly well animated, though.
It seems to me that American animation technique simply evaporated at about the time the Flintstones and Rocky & Bullwinkle showed up. For my taste, nothing beats Tom & Jerry in that area. I was a big Foghorn Leghorn/Henery Hawk fan in my youth.
Regarding King of the Hill being a long Texas joke, I’ve been accused of that, myownself.
Yeah, Rocky, Bullwinkle, Æsop & Son, Fractured Fairy Tales, Dudley, et al, were very entertaining. The modern movie imitation was a disaster, though it was nice having the original voice talent in Rocky’s part.
Pioneers of low-budget television limited animation. Then again, Japanese low-budget limited animation seems to be all the rage these days.
I think that the reason Looney Tunes/Merrie Melodies sometimes don’t get credited with the sophisticated humor that is clearly there is the sheer volume. People have grown up so bombarded with it that they pay it little attention. They saw it so many times as children, they fail to see it as adults. It remains popular, people remember enjoying it as children, and their children watch it, but they somehow tend to overlook it.
Animaniacs and Pinky and the Brain were excellent, modern, Saturday morning cartoons . . . and that is something of a rarity. I remember Warner Brothers trying to recapture the “spirit” of the orginal Loony Tunes in the modern verson, “Tiny Toons” but it was childish and boring. Ick.
There was a “Slappy Squirel” Animaniacs cartoon about Woodstock and all its now famous music acts setting up outside Slappy’s tree. I can imagine all the eight years olds watching it and going, huh? but the parents falling over laughing.
The best cartoons capture the interest of both adults and kids. I would rather watch a cartoon than the news. It ends up as a power struggle for the spare bedroom TV, as my mother can not constantly put up with Homer’s stupidity, and I can’t deal with Access Hollywood and the stupidity of the mass media.
Does anyone like Teacher’s Pet as much as I do? I don’t get to see it anymore but I love Nathan Lane as the voice of Spot and Jerry Stiller as the parrot. The movie is coming out of DVD . . . and I have to see it.
Rocky & Bullwinkle were the original of the type cartoon we see on tv today. And, yeah, the quality of the artwork definately went to a different “look” in the early 60’s.
My brother and I use to draw as our play when we were kids in the late 50’s/early 60’s.(he ended up becoming a professional artist) We use to make fun of the “new” cartoons and how bad they were drawn. Looking back, we were comparing Disney, Warner Bros. etc. to toons like R&B, Flintstones, etc. They are just such a different style its like comparing apples to oranges.
I agree that Bugs Bunny and the Warner Bros. crew has been overlooked. Those are such great cartoons and the fact that they are still favorites is testimony to just how good they are. And the music! How many were first introduced to classical music through these toons?
I know there are some that I never hear without getting a visual image of flowers sprouting from Elmer Fudd’s head or Bugs in his Wagnerian get-up.
My very favorite cartoon was one that had a little native boy, with spear in hand, stalking a bird. If I remember correctly, there was no dialog, just music. Both he and the bird moved in perfect timing with the music. They provided a perfect visual of this music. I use to know the name of this tune, but have, of course, forgotten the name. The tune is still in my head though.
I love daria.. I want to be her when I grow up..
I also love Space ghost coast to coast, and sealab 2021.
Of course, Bugs Bunny is classic, anything with Carl Stalling soundtrack gets my vote!

I just got the DVD set for the Simpsons’ 4th Season! YAY!!!
It was a Father’s Day present. Who says being a dad doesn’t have it’s advantages?

Steven and I think alike in more ways than one. Bugs, Elmer (“What, a robot pest controller with an electronic brain?”), Foghorn, Daffy (“that’s D-A-double F-Y D-U-C-uck”), there’s never been anything better before or since. The minor characters like Muggsy, Black Jacque Shellac, Nature Boy, that monster in sneakers, they were all wonderful.
The Washington Post selected Bugs as the greatest actor of the second millenium. (They chose Greta Garbo as best actress.) Of course, they credited Chuck Jones, Mel Blanc, et al., and I was really glad, having been a Bugs fan continually since I was about 5, except for the period from about 10-15.
There are a lot of other good toons out there, especially some of the older Disney stuff, older Tom and Jerry, Rocky, and the occasional Hanna-Barbera, (who did Heckle and Jeckel?), but for me Warner Bros. are still the standard.
I’ve yet to see any real life action series whose characters have the depth that the Simpsons characters have. They make real actors look shallow. King of the hill is alright, I guess. Family Guy was pretty good, but not quite Simpsons. Or Futurama. I put Futurama up there with Simpsons. You have to pay attention to appreciate the Simpsons. Most people that don’t like Simpsons like shows with laugh tracks to show them where to laugh, so they don’t have to think so hard. I’ve yet to meet an idiot that likes the Simpsons. Nuff said.
In fact, the regular line up, Fox or anyone else, literally eats retard sandwitches compared to the Simpsons. Double Retard Club Sandwiches. With bacon. And two kinds of cheese. Side order of Retard Fries. Curly Retard Spicy Fries. And a Retard Cola. No, make that a Retard Shake. And a Retard Sundae with Severly Retarded nuts and whipped cream on top. An’ they ride the short bus to the restraunt.
Real life pales in comparison to the Simpsons.

The thing with the Simpsons is that it’s so media-savvy. Like you mentioned, no laugh track. The only other comic program without a laugh track right now in my area is “Scrubs”, which is fun but not at the same level. But in the Simpsons, just watch as they skewer Fox, news programs, media in general. Like the episode when someone catches Homer thinking he’s the Yeti, and when they’re interviewing him “on TV”, the caption says “Homer Simpson, local idiot”. Little touches like that are what make it good.
Family Guy was/is good, but also one of the darkest shows ever. It’s like the Simpsons without the happy endings, without moral, without anything. Pretty brutal. I can take only so much of it. But the theme song is a classic!
Of course Mel Blanc was the best comic voice actor ever. Even better than Dan Castelaneta (sorry, Dan!)…
I think my favourite cartoon ever was “One Fine Froggy Evening”! An absolute marvel. I wish they showed it more often.
