We have just had an all-day showing of ‘King of the Hill’ on Satalite TV over here. I’m a big fan, but the show does not seem to be anything like as popular as The Simpsons is in the UK.
How popular are Hank & co in the USA?
It’s quite popular in the USA, but not as much so as the Simpsons, which has a following almost akin to Star Trek TNG, or something.
King of the Hill is carried on Fox Network here in the States, and Fox seems to be reluctant to mess around with The Simpsons scheduling. Fox is notorious for messing around with the schedules of just about any other show, however, and any given show’s popularity seems to have nothing to do with their scheduling. They never bother to let anyone know what they are doing, so when you tune in to see something, it’s not there anymore and shows up on Wednesday night, then two months later, it’s back on Sunday night in a different time slot. I’ve never seen any other channel mess with its program scheduling like these folks do. If it wasn’t for the Simpsons, we probably wouldn’t bother watching Fox at all, since we can’t ever rely on seeing the other shows we like.
King of the Hill is great. From the folks who brought us Beavis & Butthead.
Another great show from the creator of Simpsons is Futurama, but it never got the attention it deserved, IMHO.
And the dark-humour award goes to Family Guy, a show that has all the darkness of the Simpsons without the happy endings.
I’m a zealot Simpsons fan, but i think the show is finally losing steam, and may not last much longer. Somewhere along the line it seems to have lost its power to insult.
I just checked the Nielsen ratings for syndicated shows, and the daily (or twice-daily) reruns of King of the Hill rank 20, and Simpsons didn’t make the top 25. Just ahead of the Maury Povich Show and tied with Will & Grace.
I agree about Futurama, too, and if Fox hadn’t messed with its schedule, too, maybe it would have a greater fan base. It doesn’t seem to occur to the folks in charge of scheduling that if you don’t give enough of a new show to an audience, they won’t know if they like it or not. A lot of other channels also premier new series, only to rerun them within a week or two.

King of the Hill is one of the best written comedy shows on TV. Great characters, hilarious dialogue. The animation’s a bit stiff, but hey.

I totally agree, Dale. The show is brilliant. I think the dang ol animation style kind of adds to the appeal of the show, man. Like in the beginning sequence when Hank’s carrying the trash out to the curb the only things moving are the trash bag and Hank’s stomach jiggling as he walks.

King of the hill is more straightforward comedy, where the simpsons has multiple layers of wit. In other words, you have to pay more attention to the Simpsons to catch the jokes. In King of the hill, it’s more like a regular sitcom. A lot of people miss most of the jokes on the Simpsons because they have been raised on a steady diet of sitcoms with canned laughter. They don’t pay attention, don’t get the jokes, and then feel like Simpson’s fans are too uppity, and reguard non-Simpsons fans as boobs. So they don’t like the Simpsons. That’s not everyone, by a long shot. At least half the audience that watches one watches the other. But a lot of people don’t “get” the Simpsons because they just don’t play close attention to the details, and assumes the show just isn’t funny.
I’m a South Park fan myself. It might be crude, but it makes me laugh harder than anything else out there. I think Parker and Stone are great writers and it’s amazing how something so horribly politically incorrect can still sruvive on tv. Family Guy is next. I find the Simpsons is not as funny as it was, I think it piqued maybe two seasons ago. No great love of King of the Hill, but I’ll sit through an episode or two.
They sure do a lot of Canada jokes. 
Oh, I’m a big SouthPark fan as well. I watch it from downloads insted of tv, though.
And Sealab 2021. That stuff is enough to make your sides hurt.
That’s part of that Adult Swim cartoon show on late night.
