Alanis Morissette's cover/parody of "My Humps"

I’m curious if anybody has seen this:

…and I’m curious what you think about it.

The original was rather sexist, and I’ve heard that’s what she’s trying to mock, but…it seems so…weird to me. :stuck_out_tongue:

I think its funny … well, mildly amusing. Its not great music, but that’s not the point, is it? I’d put it on par with this one:

LOL!

I don’t even know who Amanda Congdon is, but I’m sure she appreciates that!

Wow, I hadn’t seen that, but now that you’ve pointed out, suddenly
I see it all over the Internet. I think it is exceptionally awesome. It
is probably less weird if you were as disgusted as I by the original
(why, Fergie, why???)

The best part has to be Alanis demonstrating the “drama” which
ensues when guys touch: she pulls out the self-defense moves she
learned at the YMCA.

I know!

speaking of the original..here it is:

A fine topic for a Wednesday …

hump day and all that

I was simply amazed to see how popular a song featuring a woman singing about her, um, bodily protuberances became!
Don’t get me wrong, lots of guys are overly proud of THEIR equipment, but I don’t remember hearing* of anyone singing about their “macho, manly mounds” or any such thing. I think people would have been outraged and protested all over about such a thing.

OTOH,I don’t listen to a lot of pop music, so there may well have been a song called "My Blls" or some such…

I love the Alanis version. Hate the original.

Ever heard that song by the a cappella group “Davinci’s Notebook”? No? Then looky here. (Warning: Adult lyrics.)

Me, too. Exactly.

That was absolutely hilarious! Alanis totally rocks.

She does, indeed!

I liked them both. One thing I’ve noticed–
truly bad stuff doesn’t get parodied.

Hitler gets parodied.

The Flying Lizards’ monotone + Casiotone cover of James Brown’s Sex Machine ploughs similar turf.

I’m not convinced that Fergie and TBEPs’ My Humps isn’t intended as a critical and scathing social commentary itself. Far too many folk in the press seem to have jumped to their conclusions without really thinking it through, I feel.

But all of that aside, to me TBEPs are a brilliant group, and are artists to boot.

Same as that, but Alanis’s version is a laugh too.

I was talking about good or bad art,
not morality (e.g. good or bad people). Viewed as performance
art, Hitler’s work was brilliant. Check out his
videos.

Parody is usually, even if inadvertently, a form of
appreciation. Truly bad stuff doesn’t get noticed.

I remember Steve Allan, on TV, read, by way
of parody, as serious poetry, the words to
a rock song from the 50s.

What he didn’t recognize was that it
was African music and it was really good.
Otherwise he wouldn’t have noticed it.

I found it amusing… but perhaps in a way I have found everything by Alanis a bit amusing. As much as really I like her music, I can’t help but think that maybe she bites off more from the steak of social commentary (now I’ve made myself laugh… ) than she can sometimes chew.
