Advice, tips, critisim let me have it

Advice, tips, critisim let me have it…

critisim is spelt… Criticism :really:

I think you’re off to a very good start: clean fingering, clear notes, good rythm (though there was a pause, an extra added beat, close to the start as I recall).

I was listening to Jerry O Sullivan playing at a session once and what jumped out was how clear and strong his playing was. Flawless timing and clear notes and not a load of ornaments.

I did want to hear something, anything, on those plain long notes in your tune. (In a jig, quarternotes or dotted quarternotes.) Long notes in a tune can be subdivided into eighthnotes with cuts and/or pats, or they can be left long but given life by bending into them and even putting on some vibrato. Long notes which are completely plain tend to jump out to my ear.

It’s surprising sometimes how little in the way of ornamentation is needed to transform a tune from sounding like a bland accordionlike thing to a pipe thing. Once I was transcribing a tune from Paddy Keenan’s playing and in one line there was no ornamentation except for one thumb gracenote- and it was perfect of course, just the right thing for that phrase.

Sounds good! Keep it up! Richard

Great…a spelling lesson from someone who writes like they were from the land of Mordor… :really:

Thanks, that was very kind of you to take the time to sort that out…cheers

Haha, Uilliam, did yea no sea da syz o me mits, I no a typist

I should note that I threw all sorts of random piping ornaments into it to give you a bunch of possibilities, but as noted in other replies it doesn’t take a ton to make a tune sound like a piping tune. pick one or two or even three that you like and work them in here and there and you should be fine. but there’s a lot you can do with that one little jig.

just keep on piping.

piperhahn

I’m sorry … that’s funny.

Plus, in Americay spelt is spelt spelled.

Carry on …

Somehow, I feel that litteracy may not be very high in Mordor, so spelling like Uilliam would still probably put you in the top 5% in spelling in Mordor. And that’s quite good, I’d say.

To be honest I would suggest that mastering good ‘piper’s c naturals’ would contribute more to sounding ‘like a piper’.

hey, just like to add that what piperhahn did was actually very helpful and what a great idea, with all this tech stuff out there, someone from across the globe can just sit down, pipe and record it, send it quickly to this group, for all to see…anyone else feel like posting how they do it? I imagine that you could learn a real lot this way…I think the man is onto something…any thoughts? cheers, and again, thanks all for input

Yes, it’s very helpful, much better than trying to describe it, but one would need the chutzpah to put their playing out there for all to see. I admire those of you with the balls to do it, but the last thing I’d want under the scrutiny of the message board is a video or audio of my crap playing.

You know I tried golf once a while back and sucked so bad it was insane, but this ol’ timer came up to me in my frustration and said everyone started somewhere, usually in the ruff looking for their ball…I for one would really enjoy watching you have a go at this tune, and highly doubt that it would sound like crap, mate…I would say that everyone has been really helpful to me thus far, I’m just a name on a shiny screen…didn’t take much balls, but then again, I haven’t much brains either…have a go at it

also, for all us newbies here, would some of you seasoned pipers mind putting up a beginners corner thread up, and maybe add a tune a month on a youtube type video? slow, tutor kind of way? add one of your favorite tunes and give us isolated pipers some hope…cheers.

Honestly some o ye havnae the brains ye were born wi..can’t ye see the humour in critiscising the title o the thread?

Elizabethan … Old … English …

In your case, Uilliam, we’ll grant you the “Old” part is accurate. :stuck_out_tongue:

Technology has definitely made it easier to learn. I live in Minnesota, but I can listen to the Traditional music shows on ClareFM daily, and if I miss a day I can download and listen “on demand.” I’m taking lessons, using Skype, with a piper who is 2000 miles away from me. Using my computer, I can take a recording and slow it down, and change the key of the tune if I want. The internet is a treasure chest of all things piping. Makes you wonder how pipers back in the 70’s (and before) did it.

Check out tradlessons.com, Michael Eskin’s web site.

thanks, yeah, I like his tutors a lot…I was just thinking that maybe the more experienced pipers here would work out a nice order of tunes to learn and if you were able to watch a bunch of variety with a tune, you could pick up what style suits you best…I think it’d be cool to have a beginners notch here…you guys help a lot more then you think…cheers.

thanks all

If anyone knows how to upload only an audio file, I learned this tune earlier tonight and recorded it, and might put it up if I’m in a good mood and listen to it tomorrow and decide it doesn’t totally suck.

Bung it on box.net or something similar and copy the link here.
