advance forgiveness required: Bodhran for sale?

A fellow band mate is looking for a ‘decent’ bodhran. (14")
Anyone know of one for sale at $100.00 +- ?

Pretty good chance at that rate she’ll have to go Paki, but I though I’d troll here
on her behalf…as these come up from time to time

Rich

Do you want it pre-slashed ?

Do they come in any other way? Maybe delivered with a razor blade as well?

Hi rgouette

I had a look on ebay US to see what was available and given your preference for 14" there was nothing I would recommend for one of my pupils.

The only thing that I would consider usable on ebay US, that is currently in her price range, is 18" tunable Belgarth, but it is likely to sell at over the $100 mark.

if you are looking at the Mid East type of drum, the 14" deep rim tunable is the one I recommend as a starter drum. Mid East 14" bodhran, but I have been unable to find one for sale online in the US, only the 16" and 18" versions.

Personally I would bite the bullet and go for the Belgarth, as long as the price does not get too high ($180 or there abouts) as it’s resale value will hold up better and for certain it will play and sound better than a Mid East drum.

David

thanks Davy, I was hoping you’d chime in..

Hey guys,

Christian Hedwitschak (www.bodhranmaker.de) has a new Bodhran “Light Line” the cheapest Modell is 125 euros. It´s cheap and good handmade quality. Check out his homepage, as far as I know there is also an US reseller of his drums.

Cheers,
Stefan

Hi rgouette

Not a problem, I enjoyed the search. The one thing that surprised me was that I couldn’t find a 14" mid east deep rim tunable in the US other than this type
14" tunable with arm cut out and T bar from Amazon marketplace in the US. It will come in under your $100 threshold but the skins on the examples I have seen here are not quite as good as the mid east one I indicated above.

The Belgarth skin, will be far and away better than any of the mid east drums, as will the build quality.

David

PS as BavarianPiper has said the Hedwitshak drums are quite nice, and the US retailer is Whistle and Drum

Hi Rich: I found your post searching to sell my Bodhran which was given to me years ago. I don’t play and am moving from Portsmouth NH to NYC (I know…) and can’t take it with me. (seriously downsizing). It is 22" wide, says “REMO Signature Series/John Bergamo/Glen Velez.” Is this something your friend would be interested in? It says you live in Maine (how far from Portsmouth?) Anyway, just looking for a good home for it, not to make money. I’d sell if for much less than it’s worth, I’m sure. Let me know, thanks!

Whoops. didn’t see she wanted a 14" inch one…

She would probably be more satisfied with a 16" one though.
Uilliam

uilliam, you think so?
she’s pretty new to it: she started with an 18"
but it was too large.

do you find 14" versions are just too small for some reason?

I have to agree… the Hedwitschak Light Line is a great little drum. It’s a little more expensive, but is a much better instrument than the Mid East. It has a very innovative and functional tuning system too. There is a “Compact” version (36cm) available for about $170 US.

If you can’t find a Compact version you can always try the Collapsible version.
Wait, that’s been covered by the messages about razor blades…

Until you hear Seamus O’Kane (no relation) play the bodhran, it’s all to easy to dismiss this instrument as and it’s “operators” as musically viable.

I have absolutely not a scooby…I am not female so cannot give 1st hand experience. Some say size is important others not.Horses for courses.
Uilliam

I see your humour remains intact sir..

Horses aside…

Here’s a video of Eammon Murray playing a Light Line:

And Rolf Wagels playing demonstrating the new version:

great stuff…

I’ve heard that someone is coming out with a line of “pre-stressed” bodhran that have been pre-conditioned by a heavy steam roller.

preciate the heads up Tinfellow

but I’m more looking for the vomit-impregnated skin, with the hardened camel-arse outer shell.

there, that about cover it?
