A song my Dad used to sing...

I need help completing a song that my Dad used to sing. He meant no offense by it, and neither do I-- it starts like this:
(Intro)
The game was played on Sunday, in Old St. Peter’s yard
Jesus played at halfback and Moses played right guard.
The angels in the gallery were singing merrily
When Jesus made a 40 yard pass and this is what they cried…
(Chorus)
Stay with Christ by Jesus, Stay with Christ by Jesus,
Jesus on the 40 yard line, Moses tackling right behind…

And that’s all I remember. Does this sound familiar? My Dad would have sung this as a kid in the 30’s.

That looks familiar, although it doesn’t fit perfectly to the melody that I recall. OTOH, my recall ain’t what it used to be either…

Late to the conversation, but my father learned this song in the WW2 Canadian army, with slightly different lyrics:

The game was played on Sunday, in old St Peter’s Yard.

Jesus he played at halfback, and Moses he played guard.

The angels filled the bleachers and oh how they did yell

When Jesus scored a touchdown, and beat the boys from hell.

Goal! they cried, Goal! they cried.

Beat them, Beat them, bloody well cheat them!

Beat the boys from hell!

My Dad used to sing that, but instead of the part starting “Goal! they cried”, he sang

Stay with Christ, by Jesus, stay with Christ

Jesus on the 40 yard line, Moses running right behind

Stay with Christ by Jesus, stay with Jesus Christ.

I might point out that we were a Jewish family :rofl:

You are right - I left out two lines after the second “Goal! they cried”:

"Jesus on the 5 yard line, Moses running right behind.

Goal! they cried, Goal! they cried."

I believe the song is actually called “Jesus On the 5 Yard Line.” We are jewish too, but in the Canadian army of 1944-5, everyone was assumed to be Christian. In addition to this song, my father learned many blasphemous adaptations of church hymns…
