A Look At What Flatley's Got

This one slipped by until recently.

at the 3:53 mark is a glimpse of his collection of flutes.

On “pause” i can quickly see a Laurent (crystal), a Monzani (ivory), and at least 2-3 Rudalls (boxwood with insert embouchure is one of them).

It’s been rumored he’s got the entirety of Paul Davies’ collection of Rudalls.

And if you believe Mr. Hamilton, the flutes are rare and “each valued at at least $80,000.”

Really?

Love how he plays the Coolin. That about all he knows? Obviously not, but it’s what he’s always shown playing!

Call me old-school, but this is still my favorite Michael Flatley clip:

Oh, and this one, too.

Oh no. Not the “Favorite Flatley Clip” thing again.

:astonished:

Noooooooooo

Who is that kid who is dancing?

Damn. I should know better.

I watched that video, here and there…all I care about is the flute collection, a 10 second snipit in a 6 minute vid. I could watch a whole hour of just him playing and talking about each of those flutes. But I guess I’m not alone in that around here.

 Yup, you started it!

That has been linked here before…

Right! Where’s my dancing shoes?? Ah damn, I don’t have any, I’m too old and I could never dance to start with. Back to the Lotto!

Was it Michael that purchased Davies’ collection? I’ve always wondered what happened to Davies’s flutes after his demise. How many Rudalls are there in the Davies collection?
David do you know the serial numbers of Michael’s Rudalls?

Some tunes here:

Seriously, what…were…you…thinking?

posh, posh. Sorrrrrry.

I know. I know. I KNOW!

Small enough collection considering he has given away a lot more flutes than that.
He recently gave a Leo Rowsome full set of pipes to Na Piobairi Uilleann in Dublin.

A very generous person.

Tommy

Pass round the hammer, eh?

to that point I will certainly agree.

I’ve searched the website for anything on that donation and didn’t locate anything.

What became of the donated pipes?

I don’t know. Usually when older or antique sets are donated to NPU they have them restored, if needed, and given on a loan to a ‘Guardian’.

The set was given to NPU just a few months ago and I don’t know if it even needed restoration. I let you know if I hear anything.

Tommy

It sounds like if his Rudalls are not in your catalouge there is quite a gap in it? I have heard that he had agents who buy up Rudall’s for him in London auctions.Maybe he also has buyers world wide. I wonder if he was the buyer of Rudall 5573, at Bonhams, that was discussed here recently selling for more than many expected.

I would have thought that some of the members here might know Michael personally. Maybe he might even be a member here!

Please excuse the diversion off the main topic. This is Flatey’s feats not Flatleys flutes but he does have mighty feats.

I was just doing a youtube search for Liz Carroll’s Diplocous jig and at the side was a link on a TV3 item on Michael Flatley. A second link then stumbled me on some pure Irish gold!

The section is called freedom it is the first I had seen of his Celic tiger show. First I had seen of quite a lot; including Irish dancing in Stilletos.Wow how do they do that! Bare with the the slow start, it’s part of the story!

Pure Ballywood! :astonished:

Well, sure. But you don’t build up a collection like that without some very small compromises.
