A Davy Spillane Low Whistle soon-2004!

board members! Davy wanted me inform you that he is marketing his
own line of low whistle’s coming soon-April 2004! i’ll keep you informed
for those who may be interested in purchasing his whistle! I have a
prototype which is really “FANTASTIC”! -TALBERT  THANK YOU!

Personally autographed by Colin Goldie?

Coming soon??? Prototype???
Davy has been claiming to make his own whistles for years!
I’ve was even e-mailed a price list a couple of years ago when I requested more information… makes me wonder what he’d have sold me back then!

I would be inclined to wait and see what there is to see before jumping to too many conclusions.

–James

I’m not jumping to any conclusions, James… just stating the facts.
See the following thread for proof - http://chiffboard.mati.ca/viewtopic.php?t=1060

sighhhhhhhhhhhhhh…

Talbert,
How/why did Davy choose you to make such an announcement?
When will he update his website to reflect the news?

And who IS “dspillane” ?

Announcement in April - - - Hmmmm - - - On the first, perhaps??

Seems we’ve been here before and much suspicion and cynicism seem to follow the mention of the name on the Board, perhaps due to a lack of dispositive direct information. I met Davey once many years ago when he was promoting his then new CD with an appearance at J&R Music World in Manhattan. We spoke for a few minutes, mostly about Chieftain and Overton whistles as I recall. He was really very nice and quite candid and open; a bit inconsistent with the feel one gets from the threads and the facts given. (Yes, I realize he was in promotional mode at the time).
That said, I agree that it would be both logical and helpful to have the answers Tony asked for.

Best,

PhilO

I know the history. I understand why the collective wisdom of the board is that these whistles don’t exist.

I also know that in recent history, the collective wisdom of the board hasn’t had that great a batting average.

No offense to anybody, but I just think it safer to watch from the sidelines on this one.

–James

These were the “facts” as were given to me straight from the Horses mouth so to speak. Received this email about 4 months ago:

Well, maybe he’s been a lurker here all this time.

l hello tony! thanks for the enquiry. why did davy choose me to release
this info. you ask? answer: davy spillane and i have spent quality time
together as well as many converstions on the phone regarding really
many things. however, yesterday i saw a response on the " topic"
post -“newly converted fan”. someone posted a comment that had
davy’s name attached to it. it read in regards to the overton whistle’s
and there quality,“i love them”! i know davy well. he would not have
made such a statement regarding anyone’s whistle’s! personally, i do
feel overtons are truly good whistles! i play them extensively! but i
respect davy like a teacher and wanted to know if he actually post
this statement(had my suspisions!!) it clearly was not davy’s thoughts.
he simply asked me to pls post a reply regarding this. also, to add
that his own line of whistle’s will be coming soon! a fair enough request
from someone who has assisted me many times in the past several
years! by the way, i am a very credible source. i refuse to use this
forum as an opportunity to spread lies!!! i am a serious low whistle
player on top of that. i know a good whistle when i hear one. my
advice to you is to relax your feelings on all this. he will come through
soon enough. hope that helps guys! all the best this yr.-talbert

Can you do me a favour and ask Mr. Spillane how he can come out with a new line of whistles AND offer Mr. Humphrey an overton-style some 3 months ago.

Or do you think he would mind if I asked him?

Something smells rotten

here’s something more on davy http://mixonline.com/ar/audio_davy_spillane_high/

Hi Talbert,

The reason so many of us are instantly turned off to D. Spillane is that several years ago, many of us were curious as to what the make of whistle was that he played in the Riverdance recording/video. From all accounts that could be made, it was an Overton.

Several people tried to reach Davy to confirm/deny this (including Dale I believe) and got no reply. Then one day out of the blue, we got a post on the board here apparently by Spillane himself stating in a terse manner that he ONLY played whistles of his own make PERIOD and that he would NEVER endorse/play/speak highly of any one else’s work. Period.

That type of attitude was what put most of us off on the man I think. It’s great that he makes whistles. It’s great that he makes pipes (ridiculously priced I might add). It’s not great that he said what he said in the manner that he said it. It came off as very pompous.

Others here may be able to add more details but this was the gist of it all. I won’t be ordering anything from him due to 1- his costs are outrageous in my opinion, 2- no market presence…meaning no one’s seen or been able to play this stuff and 3- his attitude. Frankly this isn’t the sort of person I’d choose to do business with. Your personal experience with Spillane seems to have been much more positive and I think that’s awesome.

Just wish he hadn’t turned the rest of us off so badly right from the start…

Bri~

thanks for the sincere question. Davy im sure would be delighted to
answer your question!! by all means, FEEL FREE!-TALBERT

I had the opportunity to see and hear Davy Spillane up close and personal this summer…needless to say, my thoughts regarding the behavior and actions of Mr. Spillane are very similar to the sentiments expressed by Brian…

I was not totally surprised, however, by his attitude, having already been made aware of it by several musicians whose opinions I hold in high esteem. Still…I guess it’s encouraging to hear that Talbert has has a good experience with him. I, however, have not been able to listen to any of D. Spillane’s recordings since last summer, as I find it too hard to separate the man from his actions (I’m sure that he’s not losing any sleep over this though!).

hello brian, thanks for your concern on things! your very “candid honesty”
is very much appreciated indeed! davy is truly a man of pure “talent”.
he has strong feelings(has many times expressed it to me) regarding
the subject of low whistle’s! i’ll be really open here as i feel davy really
would like me to. davy yrs ago had an aweful lot of people trying to use
his name for many things. this has made him very angry brian. it’s funny
because as i would site and listen to his trials, he still seems to manage
to be the funniest man i have ever spoken with! then, at a glance, he
is very sad that so many people have tried to use that NAME for personal
reasons to get ahead! i’ll tell you all something very personal. i want to!
davy as i met him in his home very reluctant to see me at first!!! so i
knew that something was’nt right w/ out really understanding much at
the time. finally he let me in, pulled out his low whistle’s and blew me
away! after awhile he said to me.“you know talbert i really have’nt
let anyone in my home like this for atleast 20-yrs! my wife said,“why
talbert”? his reply was, because talbert has a pure heart and this really
comes through very quickly!” now imagine me a fan at the time. my
understanding started to become clear! it’s interesting because i have
much of this on “video” but promised not to give it out because of his
feelings on things. ofcourse, i needed to respect that as an honest
person! i quickly realized that DAVY trusted me. this has lasted for
several yrs now. by the way, thanks for the compliment at the end of
your post! hes a really great guy!! just abit careful and does not
give out much to so many people. in regard’s to the overton’s, davy
ofcourse respects these makers! i spoke to him on the phone today and
ofcourse if someone else were to talk to him he just may not give out
much! if he does you are a fortunate person! i do mean he is a great
guy. he is also a businessman and this comes through very quickly.pls
give DAVY a chance guys. im here telling you his “heart”. unfortunately,
his “fame” has not always been so easy! but his low whistle is really
good! this is what i’ll do soon. im going to the studio to record w/ the
whistle. this way those who enjoy the sound can express there thoughts.
i’ll post it on my web-site sometime soon. i promise that. my web-site
is here. soon i’ll post the recorded whistle brian. i really you personally
may not be interested. but pls give DAVY A CHANCE GUYS! :frowning: and all
the best to all you in the new year. thanks brian for allowing me the
chance to express this to you and all. your gratitude will not be forgotten.
