LOvely. What key are they playing in?
Bb Major - Bb Dorian - Bb Mixolydian. Eb whistles.
Rats! I thought these were Eb whistles. Don’t have such.
Thanks.
That last tune is Drive the Cows Home. O’Neill’s 1001 #77. A great tune, and new to me. I love finding overlooked treasure. ![]()
I was just offering cheers and asking where you are in Scotland.
BTW, a friend and I are in the process of learning this whistle set. Great stuff and fun to play.
More on Drive the Cows Home: According to The Session it has several names, including The Farther the Deeper, and The Maids of Kintail in Scotland. Not much recorded. To my ear, the melody and harmonic structure is close to a jig version of the Scottish march “Culloden Day” aka “The Inverness Gathering”, minus the C and D parts added by J. Scott Skinner. I could be very wrong. ![]()
If anyone is interested in trying the whistle harmony in the B part:

I have a Generation Eb (blue and plated not green and brass) that plays fine right out of the box. I wonder if the Gens in the video are stock or tweaked.
Hmmm … Feadog heads on Generation Eb bodies methinks - I just gave it a go and works rather nice. The head comes up a slightly loose fit - nothing that a little bees wax won’t fix. (for many years I beleived that there was nothing that couldn’t be fixed with gaffa tape and super glue. But lately, I have added bees wax to my ultimate survival kit).
Question to the wise: What is the title of that song that sounds like “Rocky road to Dublin”? And where might one obtain a copy of the lyrics? it sounds much more ancient in this setting. An improvement I thinks.
Also - what is the disease these girls have that makes them play so well and where might I contract it?
This set is Track 3 from their latest album Dual:
- Tha 'm Buntàta Mòr / An Bairille / Boc Liath Nan Gobhar -or-
- The Potatoes are Big / The Barrel / The Grey Buck
In the vid, the banner shows the titles around 6 seconds in.
So yer Rocky Road is now The Barrel. Maybe there’s more info in the liner notes, but I don’t have the album … yet (it won’t be released in the US until next month).
AAArrrr i knew there was someone wize here! And I missed the titles for 2-fold - firstly, I aint wize and 2-ishly, I kept skipping to the whistle bits .. dang. .. I’ll go a googlin’ for “the barrel lyrics gaelic” minus “roll out the” ..
In the mean time .. well there’s a set to learn - including the Scotish bit .. is that a strathspey?
