nice whistling by julie fowlis also a gid wee song
I love Julie’s whistling (and, yes, singing). And her stopping by here at the Chiffboard to answer a question or two endeared her to me forever. ![]()
While her style is clearly on the continuum of trad whistle, there are are elements of her whistle playing that are easy for me to imagine as being Scottish or at least Northern, to the extent that there is such a thing (an open question). The crisp articulation, the quick, almost anticipated timing of some of her phrases, the occasional double tongue. Julie’s facility on the pipes might influence that. If Scottish whistling is in search of an identity, there are worse places to start than with Ms. Fowlis. ![]()
Lovely stuff Taity..the countryside and the Music…
The tune reminded me a bit of ‘Craigs Pipes’…do you know the name of it ??..
It’s a Scottish 2-part setting in A of Lord MacDonald’s Reel:

Adapted here for the song “Bodaich Odhar Hoghaigearraidh” (The Dun-Coloured Old Men of Hougharry), which she recorded as Track 10 of her album Cuilidh. Info and lyrics (and nice pic of Julie) here:
Yeah, listening to those two CD’s a lot…beautiful whistling, I think. I’m interested that her band seems to be part Scottish, part Irish…Cape Breton music can be such a mix of Scots, Irish, and Acadian music, I hear stuff in her music that is very familiar. I got a kick out of reading the liner notes to one of the CD’s, and one of the songs is a Cape Breton song she learned from someone in Marion Bridge, Cape Breton…I live a couple of minutes down the road.
Anyway, I’m an admirer, and I’m not getting tiredof the music. Tryingto learn some of the whistle tunes as we speak…Chloe’s Passion is a great one.
Lovely stuff. I will have to get some of her recordings. Maybe fly her out to Wyoming for a lesson or two…
Thanks for the pictures, too. I have been really missing Scotland lately. My wife is tired of hearing how badly we need to go there. Alas, my bank account and the baby on the way seem to have other ideas…Thanks for making it worse!

Julie Fowlis is great, though I wasn’t too keen on the collaborative CD she just released of Irish and Scottish music. Preferred her first two solo albums. But maybe it’ll grow on me, I’ve only listened to it once so far.
Pity I can’t view that video at work…
I bought a copy of a Jenna Reid album the other day, she plays fiddle in the same band as Julie Fowlis (Dochas). Another brilliantly talented (and very attractive) Scottish artist. Our country’s music seems to be going in the right direction ![]()
I like Julie Fowlis’ whistle playing, but must say that I prefer Annie Grace’s playing on both pipes and whistle.
David
I have front row seat tickets to see Julie Fowlis on March 1…in Durango, Colorado of all places.
I’ve been doing a jig for a couple weeks already since I found out she is coming!
y-nought
I’ve been waiting for “Dual” to finally be released in the States 2 days ago. I quite like the sample tracks I’ve heard so far.
She’s going to be here in lotusland for a show next month.
I note on her tour dates that she does not play Wyoming. ![]()
I hadn’t heard of Annie Grace before…checking her out now. Not much on Youtube.
Could someone please help me out? What is the name of this tune…I SHOULD know it, it is very familiar, but I’m drawing a total blank. Thanks!
Jimmy Ward’s Jig in D (it’s usually played in G).
Thank you very much…I was really spinning my wheels, and it was one of those cases where it was right in front of my eyes…I actually took OUT the Danu CD (which had a version of it), from the player, to start spinning through a bunch of other CDs, trying to find it.
I think you should go by MVP Guru.
