I’ve been considering picking ap a new flute from ebay and just came across this metzler. I’m not an advanced player so i’m not sure if it’s right for me, but would like to know if anyone else has one and what it plays like.
it appears a nice flute
the address is different than any Metzler i’ve seen…but it could be right. I just knew the Marlborough address.
No serial number, which is good, as that is how Metzler did it.
The pad cup foot keys is later Metzler.
I had one for a while (and now our own Mr. Eskin has it) that I liked a great deal. Metzler made nice flutes.
Just be certain it’s not pitched to 452. Not impossible at 440, but might be difficult to get it there and keep the entire scale in pitch.
good luck!
AndrewK once told me that you could tell if a flute is high pitch by some details, like the distance between the block that holds the D# key and the top of the footjoint. On a high pitch Turner I bought on ebay (terrible flute BTW) it was less than 5 mm. On my RR it’s 19, and it plays very well at 440.
According to the pictures, I’d say the Metzler is probably not high pitch… But ask, to be sure. And good luck, it seems beautiful ![]()
The seller says it is low pitched in his write up. Soem times there is tuning issues with the Metzler’s.
remember that low pitch on one side of the pond means something totally different here…though the mHz number is the same.
as i recall, low pitch is in fact 440.
I checked back to ebay a few minutes ago. the flute has been revised it now states that its earlier 1812-1815.

Probably more like the 1820’s
Hi there,
that flute seems to be a nice flute.
Recently I’ve bought a Metzler (thanks again, cocus
) that it’s really a lovely flute. Like Mr. McGee says "The best flutes for Irish music -and galician
- seem to be those made in London, by makers such as Rudall and Rose, Metzler, Boosey & Co’s “Pratten’s Perfected”
My flute is marked with “Metzler London 105 Wardour St Patent”. Seems that Metzler marks with “Metzler & Son” after 1816 and “Metzler & Co” when Valentine Metzler died in 1833, and before 1816 he marks only with “Metzler”.

I used to have a Boxwood Metzler that looked a lot like yours. I loved the keywork, especially the offest on the Fnat.

I have a fully restored 1857 8-key Metzler, lovely instrument:

I had Hammy Hamilton build me an A:440 headjoint for it, very comfortable flute to play.
