Wylde R&R on e-bay ending soon

NOt mine, and have no financial connection. This one is a little out of my range, but given the price the last R&R went for I would assume that the snipers are just waiting for the hammer to start to swing: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=330398737926&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT. Ending rather soon and no chatter. Is it just that Wylde isn’t as prestigious a maker?

Also, looks like the closeup of the embochure shows a suspicous heavy grain where we often see cracks. I wonder if there is an undisclosed repair there? Can’t get to Terry’s site right now, so don’t know if the 58.3 cm sounding length is A440 or not.

I’ve already had this one in my hands, the seller (dealer of antique woodwind) have made it repair and adjust.
the crack in the head was orrible. I thought it cannot be reglued nor pinned.
if you look carefully the embochure is not really circulare anymore…
over that the holes are medium-small for my point of view.
I think that the price is just the minimum for having back the money she spent…
but au contraire it could be a very nice one…

the case is original, and very nice, rudall style.

It’s already more than I paid for my fully restored Wylde from Hammy Hamilton. FWIW.

someone bought it. (some C&F-er ?)
the price was “right” (while you nico are simply very lucky!)
at least for the buyer!

Well it’s ended. Went for asking price. Hope whoever got it is happy with their purchase, and if a member here will fill us in on their impressions after it gets shipped.

Nico, how do you like your Wylde? I’m really enjoying trying to learn how to deal with all the idiosyncracies of my antique Metzler.

My flute came from this seller. Very professional.

Wylde are R&R.

If I’m not mistaken, and I’m sure someone will correct me, some of the best know R&R can be traced back or at least attributed to his craftsmanship.

Latticino is a Metzler or a Metzler&Co. ?

Where’d you get the Metzler from?

I like my Wylde a lot. I almost bid on this flute, but then I realized it’d only be the same thing again… kind of silly really! The Wylde takes some work to play in tune, but the tone is the reward. Just nothing quite like the tone of an old english flute.

Mine doesn’t.

In fact its rather effortless in its playing and I would think that perhaps it just suits my lip but other experienced players seem to find the same thing.

It’s a rather good flute.

My Metzler & Co. however… that one takes a bit of work.

Nico, if Hammy worked on your flute you will not get a similar one from ebay…
his work is a great extra value.

here is a photo of that flute before the restoring…
as you can notice there was also a missing ring…

Hey radcliffe, that’s what I ended up thinking. I already have a great flute, why bother with another. (Unless it’s a Pratten or Boxwood… anyone?)

Aanvil, like most old flutes the A is sharp, the D flat and the second octave a tad sharp over all. It’s better when the slide is pulled out to A=440, and really almost perfectly in tune there, but it does still take a bit of consciousness. Biggest problem is in big sessions (ugh anyway) or noisy environments. It is a sharp flute after all, so care must be taken not to blow it sharp!

As far as your edit, no, not all Wylde’s are R&R. Mine is not. It is definitely a flute that did not go through the R&R workshop as it is stamped only Wylde, not Wylde from R&R and it’s not an address that R&R were at. (So says Hammy, anyway). But I get your point, it is pretty much the same specs as an R&R, and well worth the value.

Radcliffe,

That is a very sweet looking flute. I can just imagine how good it is after Hammy tuned it up. Perhaps that is why it is so effortless to play. It take a real artist to properly adjust the toneholes for correct intonation and response throughout the octaves.

I got my Metzler off e-bay as a project flute and restored it myself. It was “used hard and put away wet” in it’s time, and even with renovation still shows signs of a full life (very far from the “perfect” craftsmanship alluded to in another recent thread). Have to post pictures of the finished project sometime soon, but have just finished completely rebuilding my home computer, so not all software and links are installed as yet.

I’m pretty sure it is a Metzler & Co, but will check once I get home (didn’t know there was a difference, are the latter thought of as lower quality?). I have bouts where it plays very well in tune for me, though I haven’t put it thru flutini or anything, and others where I struggle a bit. Of course I’m still pretty new to flute playing (about a year and a half now). Still prefer it to any other flute I’ve ever played for an extended time (M&E, Ward, Seery). Don’t know if that is the result of my enjoying the fact that I renovated it myself, or the keys, or just the balance of the short foot. Still it is the easiest flute to play in the second octave that I’ve ever tried, and with an appropriately focused embochure is capable of a surprising volume and projection even in the first octave. I don’t know if it is a function of the short foot, or very slightly smaller toneholes, but I find that the response for fingering is quicker also. I have a listing of more info about the flute and some prerenovated pix at this thread: https://forums.chiffandfipple.com/t/metzler-flute-short-foot/67678/1 Will have to get it together and do some recording as well so I can share the quality of sound, but still feel very selfconscious about my playing.

Hi Latticino,

Just to clarify, the flute Radcliffe just posted photos of is the flute that just sold on ebay, not mine. Mine was restored by Hammy, but I don’t believe anybody is claiming that the one on ebay was.

Also, Hammy did not adjust toneholes or embouchure or bore, as that would have affected (negatively, I think) the original design. He did do quite a bit of work, including pinning cracks and fixing blocks and keys. I actually don’t know all that he did, but it is a great flute now!

Regards,

Whoops, thanks for the clarification. :tomato:

That’s what I get for trying to read too quickly on my blackberry I guess.
