I’m a beginner looking for two whistles. I need a brass D whistle that’s an easy player to take me through my student period. The Freeman Mellow Dog has won this contest. So, I have a bunch of D whistles I can now trade, although I’m keeping some other Ds for future use.
While I’m learning the music, I also want to play slow tunes on a lower key whistle. I need to find the lowest key easy player that I can easily finger and cover from the get go. I’ve got a lot of music to learn and don’t want to wrestle with a whistle my small hands aren’t quite ready for. So far, I know I can’t finger a low D and I can’t cover the holes of a low F well. I can finger and cover a Bb. I want to mess around with a middle A whistle and a low G whistle before choosing which lower-than-D whistle to partially devote myself to during my student period (which could last a long time
).
Do you have an A or G in metal you want to trade or sell? It has to be appropriate for a beginner. It can have scratches and patina, but I don’t want to deal with dents. I don’t care if it is tunable or fixed. I’m easy going, so suggest a deal that makes you happy. If you want to suggest some combo of cash and trade, go for it. If you have a higher end A or G to sell, I’ll consider that but I have to have enough money left over for three pairs of new eyeglasses. ![]()
I’ll list my whole whistle collection in case someone wants to trade advice or opinions, too.

Keepers
Tony Dixon Low D Aluminum, Tunable, Light Use (yes, I have two) [[I will be able to finger this someday, so I’ll hang on to it.]]
Ethnic Wind Low F Painted, Tunable, Light Use [[I can finger with piper’s grip on both hands, but I have to land joints perfectly or I get warbling. I really like the sound when I hit it. Someday, I’ll have better control, so it’s a keeper.]]
Freeman Tweaked Generation Bb in Nickel (blue top), Tunable, New [[Hasn’t yet arrived. Bb is the maximum stretch I can do with standard fingering.]]
O’Brien D Rover in Curly Birch, Tunable, Light Use [[Nice, but I can’t control the low notes yet.]]
Water Weasel D in White PVC (no plumbing codes), Tunable, Light Use [[I prefer brass, but given its reputation, I’m hanging on to this for a future retry.]]
Mack Hoover D Narrow Bore Brass, Tunable, Light Use. [[This is my favorite D. When you make a mistake, you don’t get a squeak, you get a fun noise like you just pinched Tinkerbell! However, the Mellow Dog is much more forgiving. The Hoover needs more breath control. I expect the Hoover will be the 3rd whistle I spend a lot of time with.]]
Freeman Mellow Dog D, Tunable, Used [[Sweet and easy.]]

p.s. The Carey Parks 12-whistle whistle stand is not a sure-fire antidote to early onset WHOA. It is great in all other respects. ![]()
