WTB: Irish Whistles in Worship by Michelle Wooderson

Does anyone have a copy of this book they want to part with especially anyone living in the UK?

Mike, Michelle Wooderson is on Facebook and she has posted that she is in the process of republishing the book. I would suggest you contact her there and see what can be arranged (so to speak). The book was only available from Christ Fellowship Church in Belfast as far as I know.

I like her work with Robin Mark but do not have the book. I’ve just sort of winged it on those songs.

I am not sure if we have talked about this before, but you might want to ask over at the Praise Whistler’s board too. http://praisewhistlers.org/forum/

Thanks for your thoughts. I’ve actually tried all those avenues including e-mailing the church and leaving Michelle a message, but thought it would do no harm to ask on C&F. Republishing may take some time. As I understand it the book is not just transcription, but also tutorials on playing for worship, though I don’t know what information they contain. Sounds worth having though.

Well Mike, if I run across a copy I will keep you in mind. I am curious about what it might include. So if you do come across a copy let me know what you think.

Thanks Feadoggie. No problem. Will do.

Mike

Hey, include me in that, too! I’d like to see what’s in that book!

Thanks, Mr Gumby. Not much hope there. I checked the British Library in London, renowned for having most books in print, but they don’t have it. The Highland Library system in Scotland, where I live, doesn’t have it. I think the difficulty would be finding a library who has it. I’ve contacted used book shops in Belfast and finally got a used book finding company on it!! I could wait until Michelle publishes it again but I’ve been waiting over a year for Mary Bergin to publish her tutors supposedly to be published last May . . . so I thought I’d try and track one down.

Sorry, I deleted my post when I did a few searches and found it turned up nowhere at all in the UK or Ireland (including the North)'s Public Library systems or in other bibliographic searches (it’s a bit of a slow morning here). I decided my advice wasn’t going to be of much use. It’s probably one of those publications that flies completely under the radar.

I’ve been in touch with Michelle and re-publication is imminent, in the next few weeks. I’ll report on it fully when I get a copy.

sounds great mike. inquiring minds want to know!

I have a nice story to tell about her. I met her some years ago after a Robin Mark concert in Weymouth MA. I had never seen whistles before. Robin & the band graciously stayed after the show to greet folks & I made my to Michelle to ask what it was she was playing (I knew they weren’t recorders!). Michelle gave me a brief introduction to tin/penny whistles and told I could go to some websites like this to find out more. I did and was bitten & smitten with WOA. Since I played a number of instruments, including trumpet, flute & sax there were transferable skills. I found places play them in my own band and on my church worship team which now began playing a lot more Robin Mark songs.
I don’t think she would even remember talking to me but here is the good part. I think is was 2007 when Robin came to the US without his band and I was one of the local musicians who played in concert with him at the Stadium Theater in Woonsocket RI near where I live. He was back again the next year and I with him again for the same venue. Great experience - sort of of full circle for me regarding whistle. Robin is a joy to work with. His CD East of the River was recent at the time. Besides playing whistles with him the song,“Soul’s Desire” has a trumpet solo that I was able to cover both times as well.
I haven’t posted here in a while mostly just peek in from time to time. I just put 2 whistles up for sale and saw this thread so I thought I would share this experience with you guys.

Nice story!

Well, Michelle’s book is at last available and you can buy a copy here. http://www.lulu.com/shop/michelle-wooderson-mcmurray/irish-whistles-in-worship-a-practical-guide-with-illustrations-from-the-songs-of-robin-mark/paperback/product-21160666.html.

My own arrived yesterday and I like it very much. It’s been written with a lot of love and care. Two- thirds of the book is a tutor for those new to the whistle, which might not be of interest to many of us, but I think she’s perhaps writing more for Christians who love the worship music of Robin Mark and are attracted to learning the whistle through her playing. The last third of the book is given over to accurate ornamented transcriptions of the whistle parts she plays for a number of Robin Mark’s songs and I, for one, will be interested not only to learn them but in doing so, see how she creates a whistle part that is so different and yet fits so well with the song it enhances. I think there is much to be learned from this book. Well done, Michelle! Thank you.

Nice link. Thanks!
