I was just sent a book, a freebie because I contributed a few snaps to it, in an ethnomusicological series by Oxford university press. it approaches a few issues that are much discussed and sometimes controversial on this board, tradition, how to listen and place music in it’s proper context, time pitch and rhythm in different systems. For those seriously interested in these issues a nice read and worth the trip to your local university library. The book approaches music on a world wide scale so there’s as much of interest for those into Chinese luteplaying, Japanese sankyoku or gagaku ensmbles, Irish music, Peruvian, African, South Indian Modal music etc.
A CD with musical examples is included, with even a bit of whistleplaying on it.
I just mention it as i think some of you could be interest, I have no share in the sales.

I’d say you’re a bit beyond that janice but it’s a nice introduction to the matter and there will be an accompanying volume later that deals with irish music, dealing specifically with the development of the session I play on sundays. that could be interesting so.
I ordered the book and got it the other day, but the CD didn’t come with it. The store that I ordered from said that they didn’t receive the CD with the book. They offered to refund the CD portion.
That’s cool and all, but I still don’t have the CD! I’ve searched the internet, but can’t find a place that will sell the CD alone. Does anyone know where I can find it?
My other option is to see if anyone here can please send me a copy of the CD. I’ll gladly pay for postage and materials!
