For the first time, I had tickets in my grubby hands for what would have been a great night,
Mike McGoldrick at the Anvil in Basingstoke this Saturday, I just phoned to get an extra ticket for a mate, and was told it was cancelled due to lack of ticket sales, I missed the e-mail informing me of the cancellation and was none the wiser, whats even more annoying is its the fisrt gig that would have only meant an hours drive, and it would have been the first time for me regarding a top pro player, I have been to smaller intimate gigs which were great, in pubs and clubs, but it would have been nice to be in the same room as someone you have only seen play on youtube,
another knock on affect of the world financial meltdown
That really sucks, and I hope you are getting a refund. He should have showed up anyway though, for some of the best concerts I have been to were very small; it is more of an intimate feeling with the crowd.
It won’t very likely be McGoldrick & Co. who made the decision - it will be either his promoters or the venue.
I agree some low attendance gigs can be as you say, intimate and so forth, but they can also just be acutely embarrasing for both audience handful and band, devoid of atmosphere and bloody hard work! (I went to one such not so long back )
Bummer!
When I was going to his concert a couple of years ago, I was visiting my parents in Washington state, I got rear ended by a old pickup going 50 mph, when I was making a left turn. Never made it to the concert… So I feel for you!
I was lucky enough to see Liz Carroll and John D a few weekends ago on a college campus. Very small crowd but the setting was perfect: an old library that had been converted to a performance venue. One of the best shows I have seen in a long time.
