A highly informative and enriching exploration of Irish traditional music and culture in the company of much acclaimed master musicians, and specialists in all aspects of traditional Irish music. The week’s course is designed for those with an interest in the music, whether as musicians, teachers or listeners.
All the musicians who will participate in the week’s activities are acclaimed for the unique quality and brillance of their playing and for their deep understanding and knowledge of the music. Each will give a talk, workshop or performance:
Mary Bergin - Tin Whistle;
Ronan Browne - Uilleann Pipes;
Johnny Connolly - Melodeon/Accordion;
Kathleen Loughnane - Irish Harp;
Marcus ó hIarnáin - Flute.
In the company of one of Ireland’s most respected music producers, broadcasters and collectors, Harry Bradshaw, the preservation, revival and development of Irish traditional music will be traced and explored using audio visual presentations, contemporary photographs and early cylinder and disc recordings.
Harry will discuss some of the great collectors, such as Chief O’Neill of Chicago, the arrival of 78 rpm records of the finest Irish emmigrant musicians and the “Golden Age” of Irish music, the Tin Pan Alley Era, songs such as “When Irish eyes are smiling”, the creation of the stage Irishman and the advent of Radio in Ireland in 1926.
Historian/Folklorist/Musician Padraicín Clancy will explore the Celtic calendar in general and, in particular, the traditional importance of the celebration of festivals in the life of our communities.
The week’s programme will be considerably enriched by the variety of cultural and recreational events which we have organised. In other words, plenty of music sessions and craic both here at our pre-famine hill village of thatched and slated stone cottages, and in the local fishing village of Spiddal - guaranteeing a memorable, stimulating and most enjoyable cultural experience.
