It’s amazing really, that all the best female pipers happen to be women .More than just a coincidence I think !

Peter in your photo, who’s the lady standing between Shiela and Emer, and who is the lady standing on Marie’s right?

There are many other fine female pipers: Pamela Schweblin, Catherine Ashcroft, Becky Taylor, Tara Howley, Lottie Cullen, Grace Lemon, Rita Farrell to name a few

Debbie Quigley, Kara Doyle…

On this topic, also check out my article in the new issue on An Piobaire on Cork piper Miss May McCarthy and her tour of South Wales in December 1910.

Returning to this thread. There was a fantastic programme on The Rolling Wave on RTE last night on this topic, with Louise as a special guest. They spent the whole programme talking about her research on various historic and contemporary women pipers, and played some great recordings, both professional and homemade.

I was particulary proud to hear my original teacher and piping mentor Debbie Quigley of Toronto recognised on the programme for her musicianship and contribution to piping.

Well worth a listen.

PS, She could do with getting out into some sunshine ,She’s got a bit of that “princess of darkness” thing going on or maybe the “black widow”, kind of thing , you know she’ll play you a some beautiful hypnotic tunes, seduce you into her bed chamber and then slit your throat as you’re sleeping.

…with a reed knife.

But come on: by definition, to be a piper means not getting enough sun.

I finally got Louise Mulcahy’s CD “Tuning the Road,” and I’ve been listening to it over and over again. It’s great!

It would be nice if the “Piper’s Choice” DVD series featured more lady pipers. It seems like there has only been one so far.

who is this?

It’s classic art that Tom has added pipes to. FYI, you can search google for images by right-clicking on the image and choosing the correct option:
