wish i had 205,000 euros to spare..

Found this on http://www.daft.ie/searchsale.daft?search=Search+%BB&s[cc_id]=&s[mnp]=&s[mxp]=&s[pt_id]=4&s[bd_no]=&s[search_type]=area&offset=110&limit=10&search_type=sale&id=42546

Look at the potential. Imagine the ceilis and partys you could have here! :boggle:

Doesn’t say how much land comes with it. The house seems to butt directly onto the road. “For sale by private Treaty”. Must belong to a native.

Somebody explain what that middle picture is, please.

Is that window on the floor? Why? And what’s that white thing on the wall?

That aint’ a window, that’s a dog flap for the Wolfhound.

The white thing is just there to cover up a damp patch.

Slan,

Looks like a radiator to me. For southerners, that’s a kind of heating system.

I’m sure it’s a radiator.
And while I confess to knowing nothing about the cost of living in Ireland,
doesn’t 205K seem steep for that cottage?

Yes, but isn’t it quisn’t?

Don’t bet on it,

Isn’t that Peter’s house?

I always wondered something about those roofs. Is there some kind of material under that thatch to protect against hail and such?

Originally, no. Terms like “its raining cats and dogs” were quite literal, as the thatch would be full of insects and vermin and animals that hunt them. Modern thatch is an imitation over a solid roof. Its done to look quaint. Another variation you might like to look into is called a turf roof, where an actual sod is planted and grown over a solid roof. This is often vaunted for its insulating properties as well as aesthetics.

I’m trying to think of a good sod quip following that. Any offers?

Steve

Are you feeling lucky?

The window is in the converted roof-space.
yes the other thing is a radiator.

But if you happen to have a cool 3 million euro.. yo can get this rather drab looking detached house(in a housing estate!).

Thanks for the explanation. Now I can sleep at night.

yup!
“raining cats and dogs” was when the cat or dog would slip in the roof beams and land on your head/table!

Somewhere I read that “raining cats and dogs” comes from times before there were storm sewers and some villages would flood briefly after very strong rains. The stray cats and dogs would drown. After the storm people would look around and say, “It rained cats and dogs.”

Here’s some commentary:

You may feel free to draw inferences from the fact that the most popular website advertising houses for sale or to let in Ireland is named “Daft”.
