just to mention a couple of things i’ve started doing for my 4 year old (reed that is). i retuned a couple of weeks ago from a week on a 90% + humdity on my sail boat to a 30% - house. i realized that i will keep my little brass tub with a wet paper towel in the pipe case when at the house, but i now remove the wind cap plug at night to expose the reed to more moisture. also i make sure to always keep the leather bag and bellows in the pipe case as leather is a great absorber of moisture (leather is always the first to mold).
i am able to keep the case at 65%+_ and have a gauge mounted in there.
i can see an improvement since keeping the wind cap plug off.
just hope i don’t get that cursed black dot 
my case doesn’t smelly moldy.
thought some of you might like to try the plug removal.
