I just noticed this nice looking keyless D “Pratten” flute by Chris Wilkes up for sale on eBay. Its not mine (unfortunately) and I have nothing to do with the sale, but I thought someone here might be interested.
Beyond the means of mortal men.
Better refrain from commenting the price.. Last time i did that it spawned endless replies and discussions.. Suffice to say " I pass" ![]()
AFAIK, if it’s not a UIE, commercial, or FS/FT thread (per the C&F Consolidated Concordat on Policy #8 Price Policing), it’s fair game. I’m a tickler for the rules.
Surprised to see that the barrel has a thin silver ring and a wide engraved band. My “Rudall model” barrel has two wide engraved bands on the barrel. Normal price for a Wilkes although you can get a Rudall keyed flute for 1500 sterling or less these days.
And of course you have now commented on the price, though perhaps indirectly. ![]()
Nice looking flute.

It’s a steal at that price.
That may well be true, but personally i’d rather buy a Francois Baubet 6-key with every bell and whistle and use the €700 i save on something nice.
Of course that is my subjective opinion, with all due respect for Chris Wilkes and everyone here ![]()
Perhaps I should have written: “It’s a ‘steal’ at that price.” ![]()
Lovely flute, and no doubt a fabulous player.
Sold. Someone got a very good flute from a stand up honest craftsman - all the best
Nuala playing her Wilkes:
She’s pretty damn awesome.
