Why I deleted the chicken thread.

It was sort of fun while it lasted, though I was stupid enough to follow the link to the beheading video, and immediately wished that I hadn’t(yeah I know,I don’t want the REAL world infringing on my nice ‘cosy’ Chiff and Fipple,do I?)hmmm…

Next time, bring her flowers, and ask them politely. Try and be a bit more romantic, Cran!

Ah, I see. Now that is far more offensive than the deleted thread.

I wondered about whether or not this was an American thing and that’s why I suggested there might be a divide here in all pluralist societies. One Australian left the board a couple of years ago about having an over-the-top remark censored. He was genuinely and obviously wounded by the suggestion that his remark was in bad taste. I think he overreacted, and I accept that this isn’t a democracy, but I can understand why he would simply fail to comprehend how anyone could have taken him the wrong way. I simply got a strong sense of mutual incomprehension. I have no doubt that those who asked for the thread to be deleted acted from decent motives. But it it bothers me that, with genuinely offensive remarks being made on board nearly every day, enough people can’t tell the difference between anarchic humour and the deliberately offensive for the wrong posts to be targeted for censorship.

“In an unusual scene of sibling bonding, the children of the deceased broadened their multicultural understanding by being instructed, by their half brother, in his people’s mourning rituals.”

Seriously, though, the so-called vegans and vegetarians among us have indeed (at least some of them) responded in a rather stereotypical manner to a bit of trolling from the man who previously brought us such gems as himself in a pleated skirt (okay… being of Scottish descent, myself, I’ll not hold that one against him  ), and the naked biking avatar.

Here we go again - and some of you guys obviously need to watch more of the Discovery Channel and Animal planet. Once you’ve figured out a lot more about what you’re trying to sound so ethical and smart about then you’ll be allowed to turn every thread you see into your own little “this-is-why-I’m-better-than-you-you-meat-eating-animal-killing-insensitive-bastards” soapboxes. :adminno:

Sheesh. Can we please talk about whistles again???

(and I think a lock or a definite second nuke is in order here too…sorry Dale.)

Yep. Especially since it’s MY kid in the fuchsia sweatshirt who’s in danger of an elbow drop. You try to be pc…“yes, dear, of course you can play with the big boy…we’re all human after all…let’s not discriminate,” and all the while you’re thinking “one clumsy move kid, and I’m getting out my elephant stunner.”

Right.
That F-F# slurred start thing? I thought it was “Chicken reel”? Or is there another chicken dance* ?

  • (of course, outside of Zambia–or was it Zaire, or Zimbabwe?)

PS : I don’t like Vogons.
They travel in yellow censor-ships and ruin your tea.

The fact they’re not documented to eat chicken doens’t help.

I think you’re right about the trolling, and I regret taking the bait. If it seems I wasn’t thoughtful and respectful, my apologies to those who were.

Carol

I guess that no US general is going to hang themselves either over the abuse, mockery, and even the deaths of Iraqi or Ahgan prisoners. I posted story of very black (but sad) humour, I won’t apologize for posting it.

I have also decided with all that was said done to leave this board.

MarkB

Sheesh!

The two worst things in the world to argue about are religion and politics. Anyone who doubts that veganism/vegetarianism in America is a religious issue should note how much this particular dustup is loaded with moral indignation and righteous outrage.

Haven’t Ireland, Gaza, Serbia, India and numerous other killing grounds taught anyone anything about the futility of sectarian conflict? Not one single individual in this tussle is going to change his/her viewpoint by the simple act of bashing him/her over the head with someone else’s viewpoint. All that will happen is the generation of resentment and bad feelings. Why bother?

That’s ridiculous. Don’t.

I’ve been vegan most of my life, but have noticed other vegans, much
older than me, as they were aging, developing other side-effects such as
deterioration of the bone, diabetes, indigestion from over-eating and
wrong combinations, and mental health problems related to chemical
imbalances. Of course, there may be little-to-no relation, but it does
make one stop and think. I now eat some animal products, just in case I
might be wrong about it all.

Eating less, and getting good exercise, seems to be more important than
the type of food. A group of xc skiers had their blood tested as they
treked across the North Pole. Eating even a dozen eggs apiece, p/day,
their cholesterol remained on the low side.

Neil Lomax did a documentary, years ago, on people from the South
(USA) and I remember one old gentleman being asked the secret of his
health and longevity, and he was in his 90’s. He replied, “pork and
beans.” When I was younger and studying Public Health, I use to follow
the sage advice from centenarians more than I do now (being in my late
40’s), re the secrets to health and longevity. I remember one old man
who lived just down the road…he said in an interview with the local paper
that it was his peanut butter. Another old Japanese man, 115 yrs. old,
claimed it was his Saki and seafood every day. I have a friend whose
dad lived in Italy all his life. He ate a raw egg and a glass of red wine
every day. He died at the age of 88…from a car accident. He walked
everywhere, but took a ride into town on a rainy day. Do they know
anything? Porbably not, but maybe.

Genetic advantages/disadvantages can confuse the dietary studies and statistics.

Some animals will die if you feed them certain vegetarian food. Others
seem to thrive on it. I have a couple hippie friends whose dog, a Yellow
Lab, has been vegan for 15 years. Loves nuts, and carrots! Go figure.
Maybe there’s another purpose for certain teeth we haven’t discovered
yet! But generally, flat teeth, flat nails, long convoluting intestines is
equiptment only found on vegetarian animals.

None of us know it all for sure, we’re still learning. But I will say that the
vegetarians on this forum, if their attitude, education, and respect for life
is any evidence in the argument…they certainly present a stronger case.

If you want to read something more explicit than the chicken news story,
read the Bible.

(edited to shorten lines)

I like the Australian approach better. There is a third option besides the two you mention, which is to act indignant. That one’s quite popular here in the US. I also agree with your post later in the thread:

I confess: Clearly I have missed something. Someone help me.

Yes, please don’t, Mark.

Carol

Mark, I’d be sorry to see you leave, man. I hope you reconsider.

Seriously. Is somebody leaving the board because I deleted a post about suicide, chickens, and bestiality? Or am I losing my mind?

Mark,
You clearly have a BRITISH sense of humour,so as a BRITISH civil servant by day(hey,I had to sign the official secrets act and everything-I can’t even sell British whistle secrets to the Cubans!),acting as I do on behalf of the BRITISH Government and the BRITISH CROWN,
I HEREBY OVERSTEP THE MARK,AND MAKE YOU AN HONOURY BRIT.!(So,o.k.,Irish would have been cooler on this board, but we can’t have everything can we?).
And in the name of the right right royal Lizzie 2,Phil the Greek, and that guy with the big ears who talks to plants,I FORBID YOU FROM LEAVING THIS BOARD!! and another ! for luck!
YOUR COUNTRY NEEDS YOU!!! :boggle:

I could be wrong here, but I think Mark feels he’s being attacked for eating meat, not because you deleted the chicken thread…I think. <-----not humor this time.

C’mon, now that would be sick-humoured.
One (normally) doesn’t suicide just because of a chicken!
Or wok out for a main course issue, either.

Also, you’d be missing the good fun: I sense this board is ready for an Amazing Grace Brawl, with Billochsian Gracists confronting the Larsenian circumflexists!
