Since even the best whistles are relatively inexpensive, WhOA is letting me spread my spending over a much longer period of time, and learning takes up all my spare time, so I don’t got time for all that other stuff nohow.
Egads! Another home roaster! Isn’t there some sort of chiff rule that says you can’t have two home roasters on the board?
Kidding, of course. I’m still fighting with the hot air popper, but enjoy it when it works. Is there a general coffee disorder that would fit the manic need to roast and drink coffee in all its wonderful forms? I just bought an ibrik from Natasha’s cafe, fun!
The coffee roaster is not tempting at all since I don’t drink coffee. But the camera is great. Of cpourse when you consider you could buy 10 high end whistles it is not so desirable. WhOA is cheap considering the price of guitars.
Darwin, now I know I’m going to meet you. Not only do you have good taste in music and live close, but you’re actually more obsessed with good coffee than I am.
I gave up home roasting because I wasn’t able to finish a batch while it was fresh - I generally only make coffee at home on the weekends. These days, most of the time, I make do with Peet’s or the Ultra Dark from Trader Joe’s. But although my wife and daughters almost never drink coffee, by last count I had 7 different coffee makers around the house. (2 drip makers, Italian stove-top, espresso maker, French Press, filter cone, and vietnamese style “top hat”)
At least WhOA is (or can be) a cheaper affliction than the coffee lover’s or guitar-player’s equivalent.
I don’t roast but believe in burr grinders rather than blade choppers. Bought a fancy EYE-talian one thats a piece o’ crap. Its very loud, you have to shake it the whole time to keep it from blocking itself and it spits grounds all over the counter. Cavet emptor. Post a link if you have found a GOOD one that you have used for over a year. The one we has is so annoying that I fully expect the other Weekender (she’s 100% Italian, too) to chuck it thru a window soon.
All for the perfect cup. All along, I just wanted to have that restaurant experience, where it smells perfect and tastes perfect, kinda frothy on first pour. Been chasin’ that dream for a while. I came to the conclusion that you need a 30 cup stainless steel Bunn maker, along with the freshest roast (we got that covered with Peets), and best burr grinder… sigh.
Drop by any time. We’re just about 5 minutes off 101, in North Salinas.

When I don’t want to wait the 30 minutes my espresso machine takes to warm up, I use one of those little plastic cone filter holders for drip. I’m pretty much the only coffee drinker in my house, too. My granddaughter prefers Starbucks, with all kinds of caramel sirups and such.
Which one do you have? I’ve been using the Rancilio Rocky for about three years now, and it’s great for espresso. http://www.1st-line.net/cgi-bin/category.cgi?item=Rocky&type=store is where I got mine. I generally give it a little shake after its done to make sure all the beans go through, and use a little piece of popsicle stick and a brush to get every last ground out of the grounds chute. This seems to be a common problem with grinders. Mine has a doser, which I removed. Rancilio now makes a doserless grinder, too: http://www.coffeegeek.com/reviews/grinders/rockydoserless/texinga
Actually, for drip coffee, I use a plain ol’ whirly-blade grinder, as I don’t want to have any large grounds left behind in the Rocky.
