WhOA bites after long remission.

I hadn’t bought a whistle in almost three years (except a single Whitecap) . I was cured. Then someone goes and posts about a ‘flutina’ complete with a link. And since it looked sorta cool, I figured it wouldn’t hurt to just ask…

WhOA is me!

Has anyone ELSE ordered or bought one of these ( www.flutina.com )? Comments?

Chuck, can you do a review for us when it arrives?

From what I thought I read, it sounds like it isn’t a “proper” flute. It says it has a “built in “whistle” that produces a clear musical tone when you blow in the hole in its side.”. I am very curious how that works and what sort of sound it creates.

Hope it gets there soon so you can help out my curiosity.

Certainly I’ll post my observations.

Meanwhile, here’s the note I got back from them in e-mail when i asked

"The flutina is a transverse fipple flute, with a patented “inner whistle” design, invented by Pete Moss.

I think you would find it very easy to play and it has a beautiful tone."

I’m a little intrigued because it seems to be sort of a “melody flute” approach but the player blows directly INTO the tonehole rather than across it.

We’ll see.

Anyone who plays transverse flute a lot
would have experienced right neck/shoulder/elbow issues
at some point in thier musical life.

Why would you forego the ergonomic advantages of
a straight played whistle flute
for a transverse whistle one?

Why transverse your upper body
if you don’t need to?

Me no savvy.

Hey Chuck, get in touch with your ‘inner whistle’,man!! :boggle:

Well, I’ve got it. First impresion is decidedly lukewarm, but it sat outside in the cold all day, so I’ll see how it is after a day or two indoors.

Wood, fairly large diameter tubing. "Recorder-y tone, too breathy for my taste. Six hole fipple flute with a side hole you blow into rather than a mouthpiece so it’s held and fingered like a flute or fife. The holes are all the same size, not a promising sign. Key seems to be C based on diameter and lenght and fingerhole spacing - I’ll pu it on a tuner after it warms up.

Looks cools and comes with a nice drawstring pouch and an instruction book based on some sort of rudimentary whistle notation.

Not quite willing to come right out and say I wasted twenty bucks yet, but for now I would definitely not recommend it.

I’ll be glad to take and post pictures if someone tells me how - I don’t have access to a server to host them…
