Who played in these bands?

In about 1980, a friend gave me a tape recording of two great Irish albums: Aleana and Le Chaile. Any idea of who played in these bands? I’ve never seen any reference to them. Friend is long gone, so I can’t ask her.

P.J. Crotty, flute, whistle
John Roe ?, piano, guitar
Kevin Boyle, mandolin, guitar, bodhran

Is P.J. Crotty related to the famous concertina player, Mrs. Crotty? Just curious.

Mrs Crotty’s four children never married, and they’ve all passed away, so P.J. is not a descendant of hers, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s a distant cousin – Peter Laban might know?

P.J. Crotty recently recorded an excellent CD with James and Carol Cullinan (fiddle and piano, respectively) called “Happy to Meet.” Brilliant fiddle and flute duets, great Clare music, highly recommended.

P.J.'s wife Angela, who plays whistle, is a daughter of Junior Crehan.

Thanks for the line-up for Le Cheile! How did you know this?? Is there a source or record label for the recording of Le Cheile? I guess Aleana is still a mystery.

Le Cheile released their first LP “Lord Mayo” in 1975 on a small London based label called Standfast Records with the line up Steve has already given. They followed it up with “Aris” in 1978 on Brendan Mulkere’s Inchecronin label, with Tom Madden added on vocal and guitar. I don’t know who owns the originals or any copyright on these labels.

Inchecronin put out a few interesting LPs including Roger Sherlock, Mick Woods and Kevin Taylor. I doubt they will ever see the light of day again.

Thanks all. I guess I will have to cherish and protect my 1980 tape recording of Le Cheile and the unknown Aleana. I’ll transfer them to my computer for frequent listening.

Also - I haven’t heard this record, but have seen the sleeve. I don’t think any of the musicians could have been older than their early teens.
