Who has an Every Whistle and can you give a quick review?
I’ve seen some posts on them, and most folks seem to like them, but how about some details?
How’s the overall tone? Clean, pure, chiffy, breathy?
How’s the backpressure?
How’s the tuning?
How’s the transition between registers?
How’s the volume between registers?
I’m an intermediate player, and currently have basically all of the main cheapies, a Hoover Whitecap, Mellow Dog C/D set, and an O’Brien C/D set in nickel-plated copper.
I just compared mine to my Burke DAN (BD) and my O’Brien Blackwood (OB) Rover… I played the Everywhistle (EW) with the mute/focuser in place, but not covering the aperture at all.
Overall tone of the EW is more breathy than either of the others, but not objectionably so. The BD is very pure and the OB is slightly breathy (very slightly). I would say the OB has a little more chiff and the BD has very little.
There seems to be a little more backpressure with the EW than either of the others, but that’s very hard to judge.
Tuning is really good - with the lower octave about 10 cents sharp, the upper is right on, but the coolest thing is that the whistle doesn’t seem to go sharp when you push it, as the BD does (a LOT). Oh yeah, I need to have the slide pulled a little more than 1/4", very similar to the OB.
Transition between registers is smooth and even - the middle D really needs to have the top finger off, though.
Another great point is the volume between octaves. It is very similar to the OB in this respect - the upper octave is not too loud and doesn’t seem to need a “push” until you get to the upper B. The BD tends to gain in volume in the upper octave a bit more.
Overall opinion: this is a great whistle with most of the characteristics of MUCH more expensive models. I wouldn’t hesitate to have this be my main whistle (if I didn’t already have the BD and the OB, of course!). The added bonus of having it in your shirt pocket at all times is a real bonus. This is going to be my main camping whistle - I LOVE annoying Boy Scouts with whistles! Last point - the mute is really cool. It totally messes with the tuning, but is an excellent way to practice quietly.
OK, I just read this post really fast (and maybe it’s the beers I had tonight) but I thought the question was “Who has every whistle” like there’s one person out there who has every whistle ever made. I’m sure some of those most afflicted with WhOA are close, but does anybody really have EVERY whistle?
