…And finally, got some whistles. I’m so glad to have known somebody here in the board who’s kind and generous. I’m referring to Mr. Talbert St. Claire, a very good player/artist of whistles (especially low). “The Man” gave me some whistles to work on and along with was a CD of his own recording - I mean, his album. I was so blown away 'coz one of the whistles was a black Howard Low D, and that’s totally awesome! I’m enjoying the CD and at the same time I can play along using the Low D. Talk about someone who doesn’t know you personally, but still, so kind. Now that’s really something… I guess that’s what keeping good music alive, with the spirit of sharing and giving.
I’m on it already so I’d like to recommend the CD too.
The album is entitled “Tears of the Forest” by Talbert St. Claire. He played all the Low whistles on the album with great and suited musical effects and accompaniments. Whether you’re looking for something new or not, this album is really great! Personally, I have listened to many Low D recordings via the Internet and although they’re all different, they’re all the same - maybe in the way they’re being played… or something like that. You see, Mr. St. Claire’s music and style of playing the Low D is very unique. I have never heard anything like it; it’ll move you. Maybe that’s one reason you’ll like the album because it really stands out. The best thing in all of these, the album was recorded using different/various keys of low whistles, from Low G down to Really Low A!!! I heard that there are only a few groups people playing keys lower in Low C 'coz it requires talent, and Mr. Talbert St. Claire definitely has it - I mean, it looks as if he’s just exercising his fingers and wrists, the way he played those good instrumentals on the Low D and down.
Wow, that’s great! You got some whistles, and a Howard Low D? Hard to beat that! I have a Howard too; they have a very unique tone, and play very easily, as long as you can cover the holes. You must be thrilled!
I got this cd when Talbert St Clare was including them for free to every contributor in the Jerry Raffle. That was a very generous gift from him, I thought, and it seems that is his nature. I must say, even though I generally prefer mostly traditional music, Talbert combines the traditional with new age influences, and it comes out as a great mix. ‘Tears of the Forest’ is comprised mostly of slow airs, which tend to be my favorite. It has a very meditative, contemplative mood; and is a soothing listen. One thing I really liked was the environmental backgrounds he uses like the blowing wind (I see the blowing and drifting snow when I listen), the crackling embers in the fire, and the ocean surf sounds. They add a comforting element to the recordings where they are included.
I thoroghly enjoy this cd, and since there are not enough cds out there that concentrate on the low whistles, I hope Talbert keeps making more!
In fact, I just found out that there is a new one on the horizon called ‘Harvest Moon’. I just received a sample tape with three preliminary tracks, and I can tell you from what I heard, I am looking forward to hearing the rest! The next one will have a somewhat quicker pace, with reels being the mainstay, from what Talbert says in his handout with the samples.
Good stuff, even if you thought you were “a musical traditionalist” like me; all you need is an open mind for an interesting and captivating musical adventure. I’m glad I found his music! Thanks, Talbert!
